Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education/Training: 

  • A Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field 

 Minimum Experience: 

  • One-year experience writing in a professional setting
  • Proven experience writing media releases with an emphasis on sports writing

Position Description

DEFINITION:

The Content Specialist is responsible for creating content that elevates CFCC’s brand, enhances its reputation, and increases its enrollment. The Content Specialist will generate content for a variety of marketing projects and channels.  The Content Specialist will help maintain brand consistency across all platforms including email, the CFCC website, print media, social media, and the myCFCC portal. 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives supervision from the Executive Director of Marketing and Community Relations; 
  • May supervise interns, entry-level staff, and volunteers.

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develops story and feature ideas that elevate CFCC locally and beyond.
  • Creates and edits an extensive array of compelling news and feature stories, web and magazine content, profiles, bios, newsletter content, blogs, social media posts, captions, letters and speeches of varying lengths
  • Writes, edits and proofreads copy for distribution through print, web, and video
  • Recommends photography and videography to enhance content
  • Advises faculty and staff regarding editorial issues in communications and marketing, including print, web, video, visual identity, and the Cape Fear Community College brand
  • Makes recommendations regarding content direction and selection, content placement, and timing
  • Identifies stories that are media worthy and works with Executive Director of Community Relations on pitching stories to media
  • Develops and follows a comprehensive annual editorial calendar, reviewed weekly, collaborating with team members to ensure timely delivery of content
  • Follows CFCC’s editorial standards and branding guidelines.
  • Works with graphic designers, photographer/videographer, and web/digital team to develop features for the annual report, digital and social campaigns, and web projects.
  • Works on in-depth long-form features with multiple sources as well as shorter pieces for the web and social media
  • Writes, monitors, and updates copy to ensure ADA compliance
  • Participates in department and College meetings and project brainstorming sessions
  • Understands and demonstrates a commitment to programs and activities that support an inclusive and diverse campus community
  • Keeps up-to-date with new technologies and trends
  • Supports marketing and communication goals for the College
  • Works with freelancers as needed to produce visual, video, and/or audio content.

 

Other Important Functions:

  • Maintains a current database of all local media outlets
  • Interviews students, employees, alumni, and others as needed for articles, multi-media presentations, and advertising
  • Fosters and maintains favorable relationships with all college departments, divisions, members of news media agencies, and community organizations
  • Attends staff meetings regularly
  • Pays close attention to detail and submits error-free work
  • Maintains an organized office environment and saves files in an organized, accessible manner
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge of:

  • Social Media platforms - Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Proficient English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and

Associated Press (AP) writing style

  • HTML/CSS
  • Content Management Systems (preferably WordPress)
  • Google Analytics
  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
  • Online design tools (PiktoChart, Canva, etc.)
  • ADA compliance requirements
