Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED 
  • Four years of construction experience as a carpenter

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current residential and commercial construction codes. 
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry. 
  • Knowledge of principles that apply to wood construction; the use of shop and hand-tools; the properties of various materials and techniques used to build, modify and repair structures to withstand varying loads. 
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques and inventory control principles and practices. 
  • General knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. 
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with others. 
  • Ability to work within the prison system and abide by rules of inmate engagement and policies regarding protocols within the prison facility. 
  • Experience with current version of MS Office or similar programs.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Provide exceptional customer service with people internal and external to the institution. 
  • Familiarity with the mission of the community college.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma in Carpentry preferred
  • NCCER Certification preferred
  • Previous instructional experience preferred

Position Description

  1. Responsible for providing classroom instruction and performing lab related activities for the prison construction program.  
  2. Plan and deliver instruction covering all aspects of residential and commercial construction including the following areas: framing, dry wall, trim, cabinetry, floors, painting, drafting, construction planning, and blueprint reading. 
  3. Maintain a safe learning environment emphasizing equipment, tool, and personal safety practices. 
  4. Develop appropriate curriculum, select textbooks and training materials, evaluate student proficiency, manage lab activities, and maintain program standards.  
  5. Assist with program evaluation and continuous improvement. 
  6. Monitor and maintain appropriate inventory of construction materials, tools, and equipment.  
  7. Properly maintain tools and equipment in the lab and in the outside work site. 
  8. Effectively manage daily student activities and educational tasks in accordance with the rules and regulations of NC Department of Public Safety and the Lincoln Correctional Facility. 
  9. Appropriately and effectively relate with prison inmates that may have diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds. 
  10. Assess student learning and behavior and provide recommendations to prison staff. 
  11. Communicate and maintain positive collaborative relations with the prison staff and administrators. 
  12. Work collaboratively with colleagues and participate on instructional projects. 
  13. Other duties as assigned.
