Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent;
2. Teaching experience in fire service;
3. Five years of full-time or equivalent experience as a fire department Training Officer;
4. Five years full-time or equivalent work experience as an officer in a paid fire service;
5. Fire Service Instructor Level II, qualified and certified by the North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of the State Fire Marshal (NC DOI OSFM).

Preferred Qualifications

1. A.A.S. or higher degree in a fire service-related field;
2. Experience working in a continuing education position in a NC Community College;
3. Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, an East Slavic language, and/or American Sign Language.

Position Description

Job Description Summary

This position coordinates fire service continuing education training classes for firefighters and firefighter candidates in Buncombe and Madison Counties, based on the needs of fire service agencies and personnel. Classes include those required for certification by the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, National Incident Management System (NIMS), Emergency Management, as well as non-certification classes.

Duties

1. Maintains knowledge of and compliance with the State Board of Community Colleges approved standards for continuing education.
2. Maintains knowledge of and compliance with standards of The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the NC Department of Insurance Fire Training Division.
3. Maintains knowledge of and compliance with NC Office of State Marshal (NCOSFM) standards, especially pertaining to training, testing, and certification.
4. Maintains open lines of communication with North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) and NCOSFM regarding continuing education and course information data.
5. Develops and maintains robust lines of communication and working relationships with fire service agencies and organizations in Buncombe and Madison counties, and represents the department to associations.
6. Coordinates instructors, facilities for classes, working closely with training center facility staff to coordinate their resources.
7. Maintains close adherence to exam security and proctoring standards of NCOSFM and other applicable standards.
8. Maintains knowledge of College policies, procedures, and practices and communicates this information to full-time and adjunct faculty. Insures that policies are supported and carried out.
9. Insures that all College reports, class paperwork, and other requested information are submitted promptly and accurately.
10. Assists with the planning, budgeting and use of departmental funds.
11. Orients new continuing education instructors to the College and to their specific functions.
12. Frequently visits classes in progress, day and evening, on and off-campus, for verification and evaluation purposes.
13. Provides feedback to instructors on performance. Arranges opportunities for instructor remediation if appropriate. Identifies and encourages professional development opportunities for continuing education instructors.
14. Reviews department continuing education on an on-going basis; including course outlines, textbooks, library holdings and related materials.
15. Teaches non-certification classes as needed.
16. Serves on campus committees.
17. Coordinates department relations with the community and employers.
18. Practices, teaches, and supervises continuing education instructors to facilitate compliance with OSHA standards.
19. Updates knowledge and skills to maintain currency of practice through study, seminars, and/or on-the-job practice.
20. Designs and implements formative and summative evaluation procedures as means to assess student progress.
21. Contributes to the College Vision, Mission, Values, and Welcoming College statement.
22. Supports workforce diversity in all its aspects.
23. Performs other duties as assigned.
