Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution 
  • Current paramedic certification by the NC Office of EMS
  • NC Level 2 Paramedic Instructor or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Must have completed the administrators course required for NC Level 2 Instructor
  • Must be able to obtain CPR, ACLS, and PALS Certification Instructor within 12 months of date of employment
  • Five years of experience as a paramedic
  • Three years of EMS teaching experience
  • Knowledge of COAEMSP Accreditation process and standards
  • Understanding of online course delivery for EMS programs
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills
  • 1-2 years of experience in EMS and/or Fire leadership, training, and/or supervision
  • Knowledge of NCOEMS/NCOSFM guidelines and/or training protocols

Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Public Safety, the Coordinator/Instructor of EMS/Fire Training will:

  1. Maintain EMT-Paramedic Certification level through NCOEMS.
  2. Obtain and/or maintain NCOEMS Level II Paramedic Instructor credential.
  3. Serve as an Instructor for the Paramedic Initial Classes and other EMS classes, as needed.
  4. Obtain and/or maintain CPR Instructor Trainer Certification from national organization.
  5. Coordinate and conduct specialized EMS (ITLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.) training programs.
  6. Coordinate the development and administration of the College’s Emergency Medical Services education plan which includes EMT basic though Paramedic initial and continuing education classes.
  7. Become familiar with the Columbus County EMS Plan.
  8. Ensure EMS/Fire programs are in full compliance with the requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards as stipulated by NCCCS, COAEMSP, and EMS/Fire governing entities.
  9. Assist with recruiting appropriately credentialed instructors for the EMS/Fire programs.
  10. Submit all hiring documents and verification of credentials for all EMS/Fire instructors within required timeframe.
  11. Monitor and review part-time instructor records for completeness and accuracy.
  12. Arrange class visitations for the monthly continuing education classes.
  13. Prepare a master course schedule each semester that meets the needs of the EMS/Fire programs and the students as well as manage the distribution of classroom resources.
  14. Assist with the organization and inventory of the EMS supply room.
  15. Monitor students in the field and ensure that all required documentation is completed correctly by the preceptors and students.
  16. Schedule clinical and ride time for all EMS.
  17. Design and implement a student recruitment and retention plan.
  18. Keep current on subject matter and teaching methodologies.
  19. Coordinate remediation activities to help students succeed in the EMS program; refer students to other supportive services when necessary.
  20. Willingness to participate in professional development activities.
  21. Serve on college committees.
  22. Represent SCC, when requested, at local, regional and state EMS/Fire meetings.
  23. Maintain a flexible schedule to meet program needs which may include nights and weekends. 
  24. Perform other duties as assigned by Dean of Public Safety.
