Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in non-clinical social work, human services, counseling, education and/or related fields from a regionally accredited institution; a minimum of two years of experience providing academic advising; experience in career planning and retention strategies as well as excellent presentation, customer service, communication, organizational, and computer skills. Academic coaching experience (preferred).

Position Description

Responsible for assisting CTE students in the successful identification and completion of academic, professional, and personal goals by enhancing their ability to navigate through college.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support students as they begin their educational journey. 
  • Meet with prospective and new students to discuss and answer questions about the College, and help them to establish a plan to get where they want to go and become a settled and successful NCC student.
  • Create a student-centered environment
  • Conduct comprehensive academic advising for college programs using a blended method such as the appreciative advising model.  
  • Assist students with identification of their academic, professional and personal goals, paths to those goals, and appropriate programs of study to meet those goals. 
  • Advise and register curriculum students whose programs of study are advised in the Advising and Success Center at set times each week
  • Work to identify and resolve student barriers and obtain support to meet specific needs.  
  • Assist students and faculty to problem-solve issues related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance
  • Monitor students’ academic progress using case management and retention software and provide student follow-up
  • Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and our learning community
  • Update and maintain progress summary sheets/evaluations for caseload
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all requirements, courses, and programs (including developmental courses)
  • Maintain notes of advising sessions to track contact hours, issues, and outcomes of advising sessions
  • Demonstrate empathetic listening and the ability to have courageous conversations
  • Teach one ACA (College Success Course) per semester
  • Create and maintain Safety Plans for students as needed; trained in crisis management, Mental Health First Aid, and de-escalation 
  • Track service provision and document coaching session in Watermark or other case management systems
  • Knowledge of on-campus and off-campus resources for students and refer students to appropriate resources
  • Help students navigate systems and develop self-advocacy skills 
  • Facilitate on demand training for students regarding LMS, email, and other electronic programs on campus
  • Understand and explain Title IX regulations to students; help students with Title IX reporting if needed
  • Attend events on campus that celebrate and support students (may require nights and weekends)
  • Maintain FERPA compliance for all students
  • Assist with Open House/Orientation
  • Attend annual graduation exercises.
  • Participate in coaching specific and campus-wide professional development
  • Participate in new student orientation and campus tours as needed to establish rapport with new students.  Some evening and weekend events may be required
  • Be knowledgeable of area four-year university baccalaureate degree programs that align with NCC programs for transfer students as covered under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA)
  • Be knowledgeable of college policies and procedures regarding admission standards, testing and educational program requirements
  • Encourage and support students’ participation in college activities leading to first year progression and increased retention
  • Work closely with the high school programs coordinator and faculty advisors to maintain a high level of communication and collaboration between advising areas of the College
  • Contribute to the attainment of college, division, and department goals
  • Participate on college committees
  • Collect/compile/track Student Success Network SSO and other data as requested.
  • Maintain regular and consistent on-site attendance during normal hours of college operations in fulfillment of duties not inconsistent with the expectations for full-time employees and College policies and procedures.
  • Initiate and answer telephone calls and video conference calls.
  • Collect/compile/track Student Success Network SSO and other data as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which contribute to the efficient and effective operation of NCC.
