Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in a building or skilled trades discipline OR Master’s degree in Engineering, Master’s degree in adult education, higher education, or other related discipline from an accredited institution.

Work Experience:  Demonstrated leadership experience in a building or skilled trade field; teaching and supervisory experiences preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  1. Competence in modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, e-mail, Internet, student information databases) and familiarity with learning management systems and remote instruction;
  2. Experience in curriculum development and supervisory experience in an educational setting;
  3. A thorough understanding of and commitment to the community college mission and philosophy; and demonstrated experience in economic workforce development;
  4. Competence in oral, written communication and computer skills appropriate for effective supervising and management;
  5. Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, racial, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff;
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relations throughout the College and the community;
  7. Attention to detail; and,
  8. Proven record of leadership in professional organizations and initiatives.

Essential Functions, Job Duties, and Responsibilities: 

The Dean for Building and Skilled Trades is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and evaluating the College's Building and Skilled Trades and Engineering initiatives and for supervising the program and support staff assigned to the Building and Skilled Trades and Engineering metamajor pathway. The Dean reports directly to the Vice President for Academics and Guided Career Pathways and serves as a member of the division's senior leadership team. The Dean will also serve as the direct supervisor for the directors of Advanced Manufacturing, Architectural Technology, Automotive Systems Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Computer Integrated Machining, Construction Trades, Electric Line Technician, Electrical Systems Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Engineering, Industrial Systems Technology, and Welding Technology programs and departmental administrative assistant and program specialist.

General Operations:

Engage a wide range of constituencies on and off campus to plan, implement, evaluate and improve credit and non-credit programs that prepare graduates for technical careers in relevant programs, and other similar fields including the following:

  • Participate in strategic and long-range instructional planning for the college;
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate annual departmental goals, outcomes, and related activities, based on the needs of the metamajor, division, and College, for improved performance and student success;
  • Oversee the coordination of personnel, curriculum, schedules and resources to meet the needs of the department;
  • Establish, maintain, and nurture relationships with external constituents (including employers, public school officials, and others) with an interest in the College's building and skilled trades credit and non-credit offerings;
  • Communicate with leaders in public/private sectors to assess curriculum for emerging programming and establish advisory committees as appropriate;
  • Explore and develop economic opportunities for the disciplines and programs through grant writing and building community partnerships
  • Conduct ongoing analysis of pertinent data from the College's service area to identify new or emerging building and skilled trades program opportunities and to expand existing programs;
  • Work collaboratively with external groups and with other College personnel and provide leadership in the developing new programs;
  • Expand Work-Based Learning and map pathways within the metamajor to post-secondary pathways in collaboration with high schools;
  • Develop and manage Carl D. Perkins Grants (Perkins);
  • Assist with implementing Career Technical Education (CTE) initiatives and take a leading role in annual planning as outlined in the Perkins Local Application;
  • Identify and work collaboratively with the Durham Tech Foundation office to identify grants that support the efforts of department;
  • Maintain an awareness of trends within the programs at the regional, state, national and international levels;
  • Serve as primary liaison for overall marketing of programs within our service area;
  • Facilitate academic partnerships between the metamajor and high school/four-year transfer institutions; assuring maximum course articulation for students;
  • Maintain productive relationships with representatives from senior institutions and K-12;
  • Recommend, implement, and enforce academic policies and procedures, administrative rules and regulations, and other controls intended to maintain order and the highest standards of instruction;
  • Assist and promote the growth and success of a diverse population of students and employees through the development of interculturally competent and equity-minded management and leadership capabilities.
  • Maintain and facilitate communication between administrators and faculty across disciplines and across the College to ensure the accomplishment of common metamajor, divisional, and College goals and objectives;
  • Maintain a weekly work schedule designed to ensure proper supervision of departmental activities and regular attention to the administrative requirements of the position;
  • Support the functions of the Office for Curriculum Support and Development, including adherence to all facets of the academic change process; and,
  • Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the vice president, executive vice president, and/or president in meeting the needs of the College.

Personnel Management:

  • Complete faculty and adjunct evaluations;
  • Supervise and evaluate the department’s employees;
  • Identify and recommend professional development needs of administrators, faculty and staff;
  • Maintain required personnel information on administrators, faculty and staff; and,
  • Assist administrators and faculty in scheduling, course planning, instructional delivery, and classroom management.

Department Management:

  • Work with directors and participate in program reviews to ensure the currency and relevance of the College's program offerings in both non-credit and credit areas;
  • Maintain effective communications within the department through regular meetings with administrators, faculty and staff, by timely written communications, and by other means as necessary;
  • Oversee and evaluate requests for credit by exam, course waivers, and other student petitions;
  • Maintain complete office records, as needed; process reports, forms, schedules, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner, checking for the accuracy and correctness of all data;
  • Maintain supportive relations at all times with program directors, faculty, and staff within the metamajor and other units and branches of the division and the College, aiding them in carrying out their respective functions and securing their cooperation for the department's operation;
  • Work with faculty and staff to assess students and continuously monitor their progress using appropriate data and research tools;
  • Resolve student issues and assist faculty and staff to refer issues (accessibility services, student behavior, grade changes, etc.) to the appropriate departments;
  • Assess institutional data regarding enrollment and course offerings for credit and non-credit; day, evening and weekend schedules; as well as seated, hybrid and online offerings to meet student needs and support student success;
  • Recommend new programs, revise outdated programs, and recommend discontinuation of programs that do not meet the needs of employers;
  • Schedule credit and non-credit educational offerings that respond directly to employer and community demand;
  • Recommend appropriate and relevant instructional technologies to enhance department offerings;
  • Respond to the needs of the program directors in the department and other departments/programs of the College;
  • Explore and develop instructional and student opportunities through educational partnerships;
  • Coordinate the acquisition and maintenance of equipment and the maintenance of labs and special facilities;
  • Ensure schedules and course offerings for both credit and non-credit classes that meet the requirements of the department, other programs at the College, and the needs of the students, ensuring that the resources of the College are being utilized efficiently and effectively and that its mission is being met;
  • Oversee full-time departmental faculty teaching schedules, including adequate provisions for teaching loads in accordance with the contract of employment;
  • Ensure that accountable instruction is being provided at all times, that instructors are on time and prepared, that all classes are properly staffed, that instruction is conducted as scheduled, and that course, program, and College requirements are being met; and,
  • Carry out teaching load consistent with other senior members of the Academic and Guided Career Pathways division.

Financial Management:

  • Formulate, prepare and implement the departmental budget, regularly monitoring and controlling expenditures, maintaining budget expenditures, necessary records, and filing reports;
  • Recommend department needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, materials, facilities, space, and other resources, assisting in physical security measures and preparing inventory records; and
  • Oversee the preparation and processing of contracts for part-time faculty.
