•    Master's degree and appropriate credentials to teach in a discipline within the career communities.
•    Five years of teaching in a postsecondary institution.
•    Two years of supervisory and administrative experience.
•    Strong leadership, management, and customer service skills.

The Dean of Business and Applied Technologies is primarily responsible for leading and supporting the faculty and staff who facilitate student learning in the career communities. The dean supervises department chairs and support staff, performs administrative responsibilities, and guides processes including course scheduling, hiring, and program review. With a focus on continual improvement, the dean uses data to inform decisions about enhancing student learning and success and closing equity gaps. Responsive to service area needs, the dean assists in the creation and refinement of career pathways, including pathways that require further education, to help students meet their goals.

The Business and Applied Technologies career communities comprise the following programs:

  • Business Technologies: Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Management Technology, Medical Office Administration, Office Administration and Paralegal Technology
  • Applied Technologies: Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration, Automotive Restoration, Automotive Systems, Bioprocess Technology, Building Construction Technology, Collision Repair & Refinishing, Computer Integrated Machining, Electrical Systems, Industrial Systems, Motorcycle Mechanics, and Welding Technology

This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required.

Essential Duties

Collegewide Leadership

  • Foster a high-performance, service-oriented educational environment that supports the college's goals for individual, community, and economic development as well as its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Partner with businesses, industries, and other educational institutions to ensure programs establish and meet learning outcomes necessary for students to progress in their educational and career goals.
  • Research programs of instruction based on service area needs and make recommendations to the vice president/chief academic officer. Develop and implement new or revised programs as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and as appropriate to a program of study, develop pathways to further education that help students progress toward their career goals.
  • In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, develop pathways into college programs to help prospective students enter the college and progress toward their career goals.
  • In coordination with program faculty and staff and other college stakeholders, develop tactics to educate prospective and current students about available programs and their career outcomes.
  • Support the recruitment and retention of students through data-informed strategies.
  • Represent the college or division at regional, statewide, or national events as requested.
  • Foster positive relationships with members of the community and promote high esteem for the college.

Career Community Leadership

  • Directly supervise department chairs, lead instructors (if they do not report to a department chair), and support personnel. Indirectly supervise faculty.
  • Support departmental faculty and staff in strategic planning as they determine departmental goals, implement strategies to achieve those goals, assess progress, and continually improve departmental performance and student success.
  • Advise department chairs in scheduling, course planning, faculty assignments, instructional delivery, and classroom management. Review scheduled course offerings to confirm the appropriate number of sections are offered at optimal times in a sequence that promotes student progress and completion.
  • Assist direct reports in evaluating departmental needs, developing appropriate budgets, and submitting requests for personnel, equipment, supplies, facilities, space, and other resources. Monitor resource allocation to ensure prudent, appropriate, and effective distribution and use.
  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff within the career communities in accordance with college processes.
  • Ensure all faculty members in the career communities possess the appropriate credentials, training, skills, and/or licenses to meet requirements of accreditation and college guidelines.
  • Review and approve instructional contracts for faculty.
  • Establish expectations for employee performance and facilitate performance appraisals according to college policies to recognize excellence and support continual improvement.
  • Identify opportunities for professional development and recommend options to enhance faculty and staff skills to meet departmental, career community, and college goals.
  • Facilitate communication and collegiality within the career communities through regular meetings, electronic communications, and other strategies as appropriate. Enable communication across college units, including among departments, career communities, and administrative offices.
  • Coordinate with department chairs and/or program directors to determine membership of advisory committees, plan advisory committee meetings, and facilitate advisory committee meetings that center employer or university feedback and recommendations.
  • Employ a collaborative leadership style that encourages teamwork with reports, peer deans, provosts, continuing education staff, and other college stakeholders.
  • Make recommendations on personnel matters to the vice president/chief academic officer, providing justification and documentation as appropriate.

Data Use

  • Analyze disaggregated student success data, student feedback on instruction, and other relevant sources of information to determine opportunities for improvement, especially related to the achievement of equitable student outcomes.
  • Conduct comprehensive program review to ensure quality of instructional programs, considering instructional delivery, advising, relevance to current industry, and meeting or exceeding accreditation, professional, collegiate, and North Carolina Community College System standards.


  • Mediate the adjudication of conflict resolution and grievance processes as established in college policies and procedures.
  • Maintain records in accordance with college and North Carolina Community College System policies.
  • Process reports, forms, schedules, contracts, and other administrative responsibilities accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support accreditation activities by collecting evidence, reviewing reports, writing standards, and performing other related tasks.
  • Participate on committees and task forces as requested.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.
