Minimum Qualifications

  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and improving student success outcomes for all populations.
  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a health field and a master’s degree in education/higher education/administration; or a master’s degree in a health field. The successful candidate will hold licensure and/or certification by a state and/or national licensing/certification board as appropriate to the candidate’s health field. 
  • Three or more years of supervisory experience at the Department Chair level or higher.
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience in one of the division’s disciplines.
  • An aptitude for using data for continuous improvement in teaching and learning, retention, and completion.
  • Effective working knowledge of the policies, procedures, and operations of the North Carolina Community College System and a commitment to the comprehensive community college mission.
  • Thorough understanding of accreditation processes and 2+2 articulation agreements. 
  • Experience in instruction and curriculum development at the community college level.
  • Effective experience in working with students and faculty to address issues, concerns, and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information as well as exercise sound judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Committed to leading change and empowering teams to advance the College’s mission and strategic plan.

Position Description

This is a full-time, 12-month position in the Health Sciences Division. The division dean reports directly to the Vice President of Instruction and fulfills a primary role as division facilitator. The dean serves as administrator of the division and functions as the liaison between the college administration and division faculty and staff. 

The position includes the following responsibilities and expectations: 

  1.  Assumes primary responsibility for the development, implementation, and growth of curricula/programs within the division, including speaking, networking, and partnering in the service area and state-wide, as applicable.
  2. Provides administrative and academic leadership and supervision within the division as a representative of the Vice-President of Instruction.
  3. Ensures the continuity of the division’s instructional mission in the event of a disruption in regular operations and/or unexpected personnel problems.
  4. Coordinates the division scheduling process and submits semester courses schedules to the Curriculum Records Manager and the Vice-President of Instruction.
  5. Coordinates division-related program assessment and improvement processes and ensures proper documentation of results, including oversight of program advisory committees, division QEP activities, and student learning and program outcomes assessment.
  6. Provides industry-related training and support for faculty to ensure quality curriculum development and effective student mentoring.
  7. Determines budgetary needs for the division and responsibly manages division funds.
  8. Coordinates the inventory, maintenance, and procurement for instructional equipment and facilities within the division, with appropriate faculty and staff.
  9. Seeks funding opportunities and assists in the preparation of grant proposals, as applicable.
  10. Conducts evaluations of all full-time faculty members within the division, and facilitates student evaluations of part-time personnel by directors.
  11. Offers personnel-related recommendations, including new positions, promotions, transfers, etc., to the Vice President of Instruction, and leads the selection process for approved new full-time faculty positions.
  12. Works with instructors to select and complete appropriate professional development activities, including recommendations for in-service education, educational leave, and/or return to the industry, and plans for continued instructional and professional improvement.
  13. Orients new full-time faculty members, in conjunction with lead instructors and chairs, including ensuring appropriate training and support for their role as transfer faculty mentors.
  14. Supervises the textbook selection, ordering, and buy-back processes, in conjunction with chairs and lead instructors.
  15. Teaches classes and/or leads special projects and programs, as recommended by the Vice-President of Instruction.
  16. Maintains current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for the position and participated in professional organizations.
  17. Serves on college committees and fulfilling assignments and other responsibilities, as determined by the Vice-President of Instruction.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned by Vice President of Instruction.
