Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in health, public-safety, or related field
• Four years of full-time teaching experience, or the part-time teaching equivalent at the college level
• Two years of full-time experience with programmatic supervision at the Dean, Chair, Program Coordinator, Director, or an equivalent level of responsibility
• Ability to collect and analyze data to forecast national, state, regional, and local educational and industry trends; demonstrated ability to provide innovative approaches in response to educational and industry demands
• Experience with program review and student learning outcomes assessment
• Experience designing, developing, implementing, teaching, and evaluating seated, web- enhanced, and online classes
• Experience with class scheduling and evidence of the ability to develop creative class scheduling options
• Experience developing and implementing faculty professional development opportunities
• Experience working with program advisory boards
• Experience with goal setting and strategic planning
• Familiarity with online course management systems (CMS), such as Moodle
• Experience with regional accreditation and/or program-specific accreditation

Position Description

Job Description

The Dean of the School of Health and Public Safety is a full-time, 12-month position located primarily on the OCH Campus in Monroe, NC. Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer, the Dean of the School of Health and Public Safety provides leadership, motivates others, and facilitates change while effectively managing programs of learning, resources, and personnel. This individual serves as a liaison among students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community. The Dean promotes South Piedmont’s mission by providing effective management and supervision of both credit and non-credit health and public safety programs, including medical sonography, medical assisting, nursing, basic law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency medical services, among others. The Dean will teach a minimum of one course per year.

Job Duties

• Promote quality in learning and instruction by using student-centered principles in leadership, management, hiring, scheduling, evaluation, and professional development.
• Support, mentor, and assist assigned Department Chairs/Program Directors in:
o The selection, evaluation, and professional development of faculty
o The development of a student-centered course schedule, ensuring appropriate availability and sequencing of existing courses
o The implementation of pedagogical innovation
o The oversight of program review and student learning outcomes assessment process
o The coordination of the development, implementation, and evaluation of new courses, ensuring appropriate availability and sequencing of new courses
o Participate in developing recommendations for the School’s budget, including forecasting anticipated budgetary needs for staffing, equipment and supplies; monitor expenditures
o Actively participate in College committees and activities, including (but not limited to), Planning Councils, Advisory Boards, other College committees, College activities and events, and participate in College-related community activities and events
• Interact and communicate (orally and in writing) positively, effectively, cooperatively, and tactfully with diverse groups, which may include faculty, staff, administrators, the media, business and industry leaders, government officials, and community representatives
• Actively participate in student recruitment and retention activities, admissions, advising, and registration activities
• Actively participate in grant prospecting, authoring, editing, evaluation, and reporting
• Cultivate and maintain strong partnerships with appropriate community stakeholders in support of programmatic and institutional advancement
• Demonstrate a high-level of professionalism, innovation, collaboration, and institutional commitment in all actions
• Lead the School of Health and Public Safety in program development designed to meet area workforce and training needs
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer
