Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in English, Humanities or Communications; three to five years of teaching experience plus two to three years of administrative experience at a community college; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. 

Knowledge of Job:  Has considerable knowledge of the practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Division and the College as they pertain to the position.  Has comprehensive knowledge of the English and Humanities Department and has the ability to coordinate all activities of the Department.  Has comprehensive knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping practices and procedures as they relate to the position; is able to prepare and administer the budget.  Has knowledge of general office operations, functions, and procedures as they relate to the position.  Has the ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and related information.  Has the ability to use abstract thinking in curriculum planning, course planning, etc.  Has excellent human relations skills; is able to advise students and handle student problems effectively.  Has the ability to communicate with various individuals and groups such as students, staff, peers, other PCC personnel, etc.  Has the knowledge and skills required to effectively instruct students in the area of English and/or humanities; has the ability to apply principles of influence systems.  Has excellent knowledge of and skills in teaching methods and procedures as they relate to the particular goals of the Department.  Is able to use independent judgment in routine as well as non-routine situations such as student/instructor problems, the budgeting process, etc.  Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology utilized within the Department.  Has the ability to understand the educational and psychological aspects of job.  Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and office operations.  Is able to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments in a timely fashion.  Knows how to estimate time, materials and supplies required to complete various routine activities.  Is able to promote efficient completion of duties.  Has good organizational and management skills.  Has the ability to operate office machines and various types of audio-visual equipment in the performance of duties.  Has comprehensive knowledge of computers as required in directing the computer lab.  Has the ability to work under stressful conditions related to heavy workloads, coping with burnout, handling the extreme amount of paperwork, dealing with sensitive and potentially volatile students, etc. Has the ability to make sound, educated decisions.
Quality of Work:  Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.   Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts with all College departments and divisions, co?workers and the general public.
Quantity of Work:  Maintains effective and efficient output of all duties and responsibilities as described under "Specific Duties and Responsibilities."
Dependability:  Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and for meeting deadlines.  Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, College policy, standards and prescribed procedures.  Accepts accountability for meeting assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.
Attendance:  Attends work regularly and adheres to College policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness.  Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and time?off requests.

Planning:  Plans, directs and uses information effectively in order to enhance activities and production of the department.  Knows and understands the expectations of the College regarding the activities of the department and works to see that these expectations are met.  Designs and formulates ways, means, and timing to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and the College.  Within the constraints of College policy, formulates the appropriate strategy and tactics for achieving departmental and College objectives.  Organizes, arranges and allocates manpower, financial and other designated resources in an efficient and effective way so as to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and the College.
Organizing:  Organizes own work and that of subordinate staff well.  Ensures that staff members know what results are expected of them and that they are regularly and appropriately informed of all College and department matters affecting them and/or of concern to them.
Staffing:  Works with the Personnel Department to select and recommend employment of personnel for the department who are qualified both technically and philosophically to meet the needs of the department and College.  Personally directs the development and training of department personnel in order to ensure that they are properly inducted, oriented and trained.
Leading: Provides a work environment which encourages clear and open communications. Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how such principles are to be applied.  Provides adequate feed?back to staff so that they know whether their performance levels are satisfactory.  Commends and rewards employees for outstanding performance yet does not hesitate to take disciplinary action when necessary.  Exercises enthusiasm in influencing and guiding others toward the achievement of College goals and objectives.
Controlling:  Provides a work environment which is orderly and controlled.  Coordinates, audits, and controls manpower and financial resources efficiently and effectively.  Coordinates, audits, and controls the utilization of materials and equipment efficiently and effectively.  Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of College standards, methods and procedures.  
Delegating:  Assigns additional duties to staff as necessary and/or appropriate in order to meet department goals, enhance staff abilities, build confidence on the job and assist staff members in personal growth.  Has confidence in staff to meet new or additional expectations.

Position Description

Under limited supervision, performs highly responsible supervisory management and administrative functions for the English & Humanities Department of the Arts and Sciences Division of Pitt Community College.  Instructs students in various English and/or humanities classes and interacts with and assists students in various areas.  Reports to the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Performs various administrative duties in support of the English and Humanities Department including scheduling classes, evaluating and assigning teacher loads, approving course outlines, planning and implementing the budget, maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment, ensuring that equipment functions properly, ordering books, adopting texts, directing and coordinating housekeeping and security functions, and conducting long-range planning, etc.
Performs such supervisory duties as instructing staff; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; solving problems; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; selecting new employees; and recommending transfers, committee assignments, promotions, disciplinary actions, discharges, and salary increases. Fosters collegial relationships within department.
Instructs students in various English and/or humanities classes.  Duties include preparing lesson plans, course syllabuses, handouts, activities, lectures, and tests; setting up materials on a Learning Management System; conducting online and/or seated classes; conducting critiques and holding conferences; and grading assignments.  Prepares various reports related to classes including 10% attendance reports, end-of-semester reports, grade reports, rolls, etc. 
Performs various student-related duties including advising students, assisting students with class registration, counseling with students, evaluating transcripts, recommending placement tests, and referring students for tutors and services.  Completes various student forms such as withdrawals, registration, drop/add, Student Ed Plans, graduation readiness, course substitutions, and credit by examination.
Remains active in professional organizations and activities.  Keeps abreast of newest research in the teaching of English and in technological advancements by reading professional journals, participating in professional development, attending conferences, and visiting local businesses and industry.
Maintains good working relationships with all departments on campus.
Responds to phone calls, emails, and messages, providing information and answering inquiries as appropriate.
Receives, reviews, processes, files and/or submits a variety of documents and reports such as purchase orders, minutes of meetings, agendas, newsletter copy, school calendar, standard operating procedures for various activities/processes in the Department, proposals, recommendations, annual objectives, book orders, memos, and general letters of correspondence.
Operates, utilizes, and maintains various types of equipment and supplies including computers, copier, audio-visual equipment, etc.  Uses current software to accomplish tasks. Serves on various committees as directed, requested, or chosen.  Attends meetings as required.  Performs other duties as required.
