  • Three years teaching experience in a community college setting
  • Experience in instruction and curriculum development in a community college setting

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

 

Under limited supervision, the Department Chair of Math and Science functions as a 12 month faculty member with administrative responsibilities with include the coordination, oversight, leadership and day to day supervision and operation of the Math and Science departments. This individual is also responsible for planning and budgeting, course scheduling, evaluation of instructors, recruiting and employment of full-time and part-time faculty, and student appeals as outlined below.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

  • Consult with faculty regarding selection of supplies, equipment, equipment repairs, and textbooks for courses of study
  • Schedule laboratory facilities and oversee maintenance of laboratories and prep rooms
  • Be alert to public relations opportunities and use these to promote the college and the department
  • Recommend teaching assignments of faculty
  • Recruit credentialed and qualified faculty for teaching assignments
  • Orient new instructors to their responsibilities and to the College’s operations and policies
  • Evaluate instructors within departments and make recommendations regarding continuation or termination of employment
  • Assess and plan the department budget
  • Set a climate for positive growth and expectations among faculty by supporting the goals and objectives of the departments
  • Hear student appeals and settle disputes between students and instructors
  • Oversee assessment of program level outcomes and general education core outcomes pertinent to the departments
  • Oversee the development of course description and outlines for new courses
  • Serve as a faculty advisor and maintain availability to students, faculty, and staff
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through a variety of sources
  • Commit to a student-centered and student-success learning environment and comprehensive community college mission
  • Perform other duties as assigned
