Minimum Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, takes initiative, functions with high degree of independence, with extensive knowledge of nursing and commitment to best practice. 
  • Has broad general education including courses in the humanities, literature, mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences. 
  • Holds a baccalaureate degree and has a graduate degree with a major in nursing from an accredited school. 
  • Holds a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina. 
  • Has five calendar years of prior full-time experience in professional nursing with a minimum of two calendar years prior full-time employment in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse and a minimum of two years full-time experience teaching at or above the associate degree nursing level of education. 
  • Has current professional liability insurance at a rate of $1,000,000/$3,000,000. 
  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication and ability to facilitate learning of concepts related to the individual, nursing and healthcare.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six plus years of prior teaching experience in professional nursing with a minimum of three calendar years of prior full-time employment in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse and a minimum of three years full-time experience teaching at or above the associate degree nursing level of education. 

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Recognize the legitimacy of faculty interests and remain open to collegial governance and shared leadership. Leads by example and is transparent in decision making. 
  • Ensures that faculty members are aware of and have access to training in best practices for teaching the discipline(s) offered. Encourages continuous growth in current/relevant forms of professional development and engagement with others in the immediate and related disciplines (e.g., participation in professional meetings and professional development). 
  • Maintains morale and fosters collegiality based on open communication, trust, and shared responsibility, as well as respects confidentiality. 
  • Promotes a shared vision. Advocates, and communicates departmental priorities to the Dean and Vice President of Academics Affairs, as well as communicates institutional priorities to the department. 
  • Ensures that the department’s curricula are current, supports the department’s strategic priorities, meets relevant accreditation or other standards, and is responsive to student concerns, demands and regional need. 
  • Ensures that all faculty and staff in the department receive written performance reviews each year, with formative, substantive, and summative feedback. Discusses each performance review with faculty and staff verbally, prior to final submission. Encourages growth goals and provides support and opportunities for development. 
  • Ensures that periodic program reviews build on annual assessment measures/findings that are conducted with input from all relevant stakeholders (faculty, students, advisory committees, alumni, etc.), and completed in a timely manner. Ensures the appropriate use of data to develop critical goals centered on student retention and success as appropriate to the discipline(s). 
  • Responsive to the needs of faculty, staff, and students. Regularly communicates with department members and serves as a mentor and mediator in resolving conflict between and among faculty, staff, and students. Promotes effective resolution in resolving conflict and encourages personal responsibility, reflective listening, empathy, collaboration, and compromise. 
  • Consults with department faculty about the scheduling of courses by various delivery methods (on-campus, online, at remote sites, weekend) as needed and as appropriate to the discipline(s). Consults with department faculty about staffing decisions, retention efforts, departmental budget, facilities, equipment, program reviews, and accreditation. Prepares salary recommendations and requests for new resources as needed to support enrollment and retention 
  • Advances the college’s mission and Core Values of respect, opportunity, helpfulness, integrity, and excellence. 
  • Develops professional relationships and shows courtesy and respect while working with advisees and/or students. 
  • Demonstrates respect for advisees and/or students as individuals; this includes respecting the confidentiality of information shared while interacting. 
  • Responds to emails from students, colleagues, Department Chairs, Deans, VPs, and President in a timely and professional fashion. 
  • Discourages any form of harassment, bullying, and/or abrasive behavior directed at colleagues, students, and campus visitors. 
  • Works in partnership with colleagues and students across campus to identify and address needs/resources that will ensure equity, access, and opportunity for all. 
  • Supports open expression and diversity and is courteous, sensitive, and respectful to others. 
  • Attends educational offerings that enhance knowledge of diversity and cultural competency.
