Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, and objectives of the North Carolina Community College System.
  • Three years professional work experience in managing a marketing and/or public relations function in a public sector or non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in using various computer software, including word processing, desktop publishing and illustrative and graphics software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

 

  • Master's degree in communications, public relations, journalism or English with writing and editing emphasis, public administration or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Five years professional experience in managing a marketing function in a public sector or non-profit organization.
  • Experience working with educational, governmental and/or non-profit institutions.
  • Strong interviewing, writing, editing, organizational and computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

The role of the Director of Communications and Marketing is to promote and advance the college's mission, vision and goals by building support for the institution and the college brand through the promotion of the college's initiatives, programs, publications, advertisements, services and events to various audiences. The Director of Communications and Marketing will be responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, evaluating and improving the marketing and promotional efforts of the College. The Director of Communications and Marketing will oversee the planning, development and production of official college publications and communications; and is responsible for the dissemination of information for internal and external communications of the College, including public information, media relations and government relations by maintaining the public image of the institution. 

 

The Director of Communications and Marketing will report directly to the President. 

 

 Examples of Duties:

  • Serve as Public Information Officer
  • Develop and maintain marketing standards to be used throughout the College; oversee brand management of the College to ensure all marketing communications, recruitment, and general information materials are consistent with institutional messaging
  • Prepare and manage the Public Relations/Marketing budget, including the evaluation of expenditures through assessment of outcomes; conduct evaluations of all marketing, promotions, and public affair functions of the college and makes improvements based on results
  • Stay abreast of all public information communications from the NC Community Colleges System office
  • Oversee strategic implementation of college-wide social media initiatives
  • Collaborate with other college personnel, write, edit, and develop information for the College website and college-wide publications, such as the college catalog, scripts, external newsletters, annual reports, alumni publication, program-specific promotional materials, graduation materials, and program information
  • Connect media personnel to appropriate college personnel for interviewing and information sharing and provides training to college employees for responding to media as appropriate
  • Serve as a college photographer; authorize, edit, and approve the release of public information and photographic images and review published media releases and advertisements for accuracy
  • Schedule and approve all messaging for the college electronic sign and remove messages in a timely manner
  • Attend Board of Trustees and Foundation meetings as well as other college and community meetings as directed by the president and communicate on meeting and board activities to the media and the college
  • Keep the president informed about community matters which impact the college
  • Serve as a consultant for others in the College in the areas of public relations, marketing and enrollment management
  • Serve on the Crisis Communication Team and send out regroup alert message for the college and notifies external parties.
  • Exercise direct supervision of the Creative Director, Web Developer/Webmaster and the Part-time Social Media Coordinator/Journalist.
  • Performs other general duties as assigned by the President

 

Other Duties:

  • Assist in the assessment of ongoing technology and media needs
  • Regular travel throughout the seven-county service area and occasional travel outside of the service area
