Minimum Qualifications

Educational and Licensing Requirements:
The academic preparation must meet the requirements of SACS and any other specialized accrediting/certifying agencies.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. All coursework must be from an accredited institution.
  • Current NC Dental Hygiene License.
  • DANB Certification

Must have a background in educational methodology or present a plan to enroll in coursework to obtain educational methodology within six months of hire. 

Experience Requirements:
Minimum of 2 years of full-time clinical dental hygiene practice.

Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in dental hygiene/dental assisting clinical and didactic setting.

Position Description

Perform management functions for DA Program, including working collaboratively with the SHPS Innovation Center Executive Director, Dean of Health and Public Services, and Dental Hygiene Department Head, oversee departmental budget process, hiring and supervision of DA faculty, adherence to college and departmental policies and procedures, recruitment and retention of students, serve on a variety of college committees, including program advisory committees.

Lead in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and procedures for assigned academic department by analyzing problems, identifying solutions, and making and implementing recommenda­tions for improvement to ensure that departmental operations meet the goals and objectives of the college and the needs of the student popula­tion.

Participate in the development, implementa­tion, and review of curriculum, courses, and programs by recommending schedule of courses and instructor assignments; by reviewing and/or developing syllabi for courses; by coordinating, planning, and participating in the instruction of classes; by reviewing and selecting textbooks; and by providing oversight for various course delivery methods.

Provide classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical instruction to students at scheduled times; develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; proctor tests; grade and record individual scores and evaluate student performance in laboratory/clinical when applicable.

Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances; train students in the safe handling of hazardous substances or equipment, according to OSHA standards.

Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and/or courses including assessing the relevancy and impact of various lessons. Select, recommend, order, and maintain a variety of instructional supplies including textbooks and laboratory equipment.

Participate in a variety of student related administrative and support activities including academic advising and counseling, student registration, reviewing admission requirements, program evaluation, monitoring student progress, disciplinary actions, maintenance of student records and accurate programmatic reporting to accrediting body and testing entities.

Maintain current knowledge in the appropriate academic fields; workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as required or necessary for licensure.

Develop and maintain personal contacts with business and industry, and serve as a liaison between college programs and clinical agencies.

Maintain required office hours according to established policies to provide support to students and faculty.

Maintain supplies for the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Program via North Carolina’s E-procurement System.

Responsible for oversight or maintenance of departmental or program webpages.

Maintain dental hygiene and dental assisting equipment.

Participate in additional duties as assigned by the Department Head of Dental Hygiene.
