Minimum Qualifications
Education Required
- A master’s degree in human resources management, business/public administration, counseling, communications, adult education, or a related field and a minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience related to employee relations; OR a bachelor’s degree with significant experience (10+ years) managing activities directly related to employee relations functions.
Experience Required
- Experience guiding supervisors and management in employee relations issues.
- Experience in conducting a wide range of personnel-related investigations.
Preferred Qualifications
Education Preferred
- PHR /SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources)/SHRM certification is a plus but not required.
Experience Preferred
- Prefer experience in higher education, including employee relations experience involving academic faculty.
Position Description
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Human Resources, the Director of Employee Relations functions as the primary resource and liaison for employee relations for the college. The Director facilitates a climate of trust, respect, equity, and civility across the college. The position also oversees the policies, procedures, and programs of the College’s Employee Relations department, developing and improving programs related to employee performance, morale, and satisfaction. This position maintains the highest level of integrity, confidentiality, and a commitment to creating an environment in which employees can perform and thrive.
The Director works with senior leadership and the Director of Professional Development as a strategic partner to address changing organizational and performance needs and promote employee engagement. As part of the HR Leadership Team, the Director collaborates with the college community to support a high-performance work culture. The Director has routine and ongoing contact and collaboration with a wide variety of college faculty and staff. The Director understands the College’s mission and strategic direction and provides information, analyses, and consultation on a wide range of employee relations matters. The Director stays abreast of talent needs and trends, leveraging data to help analyze and identify faculty and staff issues, and works closely with Director of Employee Development in designing and facilitating educational experiences to support excellence in performance.
The Director communicates organizational culture, policies and procedures, tools, and resources to colleagues and internal clients. Communication methods include presentations to large and small groups; writing reports, policies, procedures, and training materials; and consultations with senior leaders, managers, supervisors, and employees. Responsibilities include overseeing performance management solutions, and handling employee grievances, investigations of alleged employee misconduct and other employment-related difficulties, termination or non-renewal of employment, and employee well-being programs. The Director also supports the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for faculty and staff.
