Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  NC Office of the State Fire Marshal (NC OSFM) certified Firefighter II, Technical Rescuer or Fire and Life Safety Educator for 5 years, NC Office of Emergency Medical Services certified EMT, NC OSFM certified Level II Fire Instructor and qualified in one NC OSFM certification topic.  

Must also have three years of experience within the past five years carrying out the duties of a firefighter, technical rescuer or fire and life safety educator.

Position Description

Responsible for planning, coordination, delivery and submission of paperwork for the NCC Recruit Firefighter Academy and oversight of overall planning, organization, administration and maintenance of all other pre-service and in-service Fire and Rescue, the Public Safety Training facility (PSTF) and applicable Fire and Health Services equipment training Center (CTC), and Public Safety Training facility (PSTF).Responsible for planning, coordination, delivery and submission of paperwork for the NCC Recruit Firefighter Academy and oversight of overall planning, organization, administration and maintenance of all other pre-service and in-service Fire and Rescue, the Public Safety Training facility (PSTF) and applicable Fire and Health Services equipment training Center (CTC), and Public Safety Training facility (PSTF).

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate delivery of the NCC Recruit Firefighter Training Academy and submit appropriate paperwork.
  • Recommend organizational structure within Fire and Health Services that will best facilitate efficient operations.
  • Establish and maintain a working environment that encourages employee development, retention, high level of morale, excellent customer service and promotion of Nash Community College.
  • Maintain effective relations with staff, faculty, students, community, other educational institutions, businesses and public safety organizations.
  • Interpret North Carolina, NC OSFM, NCCCS and NCC codes, policies and memos as accurately and constructively as possible.
  • Maintain and expand current certifications/qualifications to facilitate active participation in local departments and organizations to maintain/build relationships, develop strategies and implement plans that will meet current and anticipated training needs of public safety agencies and local businesses.
  • Ensure safeguarding and management of all applicable test materials and lesson plans as directed by the OC OSFM and local agencies.
  • Explore and evaluate new courses and methods of instruction through ongoing contact with fire, rescue, emergency management, EMS and fire code enforcement officials, and by visitation and attendance of local and state meetings and classes.
  • Register, collect, verify and forward monies collected during registration to the business office.
  • Manage ordering and maintenance of necessary instructional supplies and equipment to facilitate applicable training.
  • Prepare, recommend and manage budgets associated with Fire and Health Services.
  • Function as liaison between students and NC OSFM regarding certification questions and concerns, as required of a NC OSFM delivery agency.
  • Keep current rules and regulations of outside agencies that affect Fire and Health Services programs and inform the Department Chair of relative changes.
  • Manage advertising and recruitment efforts.
  • Supervise faculty and staff for the Fire Services department.
  • Oversee maintenance of the Public Safety Training Facility (PSTF) and provide storage and care of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Conduct class visits as stated in the accountability and credibility plan in order to supervise and evaluate performance of part-time instructors and course delivery according to NC OSFM guidelines.
