Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years leadership and managerial experience in networking and computer related positions with demonstrated management of a technical team while providing vision and developing strategic goals.
  • Experience in an educational environment. Experience in project planning, budgeting, managing, and implementation of enterprise level projects.  Demonstrated commitment to customer and team-orientated management. 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Windows Workstation and Server
  • Hardware and software support
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems, software and hardware configuration
  • Local Area Network (LAN) fundamentals and remote access troubleshooting, including network interface connection and user installation
  • Network topologies
  • LAN administration, servers and network architecture, TCP/IP, Apple Talk and other protocols
  • Voice communications equipment
  • Commonly used software systems such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, powerpoint, Access, Publisher, Outlook, Visio and Project)
  • Third-party systems accessed via desktop client or web-based interface

Position Description

DEFINITION

 

To constantly evaluate and develop a workable specification set for the information technology needs of the campus. These needs would encompass primarily instructional computing needs and process; however, in an integrated network environment, would also encompass support for administrative functions, relative to network and PC functions. These needs are readily defined as the campus networking infrastructure, systems, and environments.

The infrastructure environment is defined as both the Fiber Optic systems and the copper based system used for data and communications functions. Due to the rapid integration of the information technology world into telephone services, this is a logical progression of cable resources.

In addition to the networking system, all hardware and peripherals shall be managed by the Director of Information Technology Services, with the exception of the UNIX (adminis­tra­tive) system. The Director shall work in cooperation with the Director of Information Services to establish and maintain an efficient functional integration into the network.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a full journey level class within the Information Systems Technician series.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Vice President of Technology and Innovation.

Exercises supervision of the Director of Information Services, Technology Services, Telecommunications, and for computer lab assistants as appropriate.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential duties and responsibilities

Design, maintain, configure, and support the campus networking system. This would include electronic mail (e-mail), and other varied networking technologies subsystems as well as recommendation of improvements, enhancements, conver­sions to new hardware, etc.

Design, configure, and support campus internet web site and maintain user access to the internet.

Monitor and/or install data communication lines and resolve user data communica­tion problems. Assist operators as needed.

Distribute work assignments and maintain a log of all work activities including the repair, maintenance, testing, and replacement of computer and peripheral equipment.

Monitor network output devices campus wide. These would include printers, plotters, terminals, and kiosks.

Perform "Grandfather" type back-up plan on campus systems.

Plan, coordinate, and implement security measures to safeguard computer files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure. This may include the installation of vendor issued security software.

Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate disaster recovery procedures at on-campus and remote sites as needed to ensure security as well as meet emergency data processing needs.

Report violations of security procedures to appropriate supervisors and instruct violator of offense.

Constantly evaluate emerging trends and opportunities for academic and adminis­tra­tive information growth areas.

Conduct in-service and individual training for supported applications and technolo­gies including procedures, vendor equipment and software instructions, demonstra­tion, etc.

Research, test, evaluate, and recommend hardware and software for instructional purposes; determine applications and student benefits.

Develop and write procedures as well as recommend policies for installation, use, problem prevention, etc. as relative to computer/network operations.

Develop programming as is appropriate for assigned area of responsibility; make recommendations as needed.

Attend staff meetings, vendor demonstrations, and seminars as needed for information distribution/sharing.

Manage Information Technology budget.

Other important duties and responsibilities

Organize and/or supervise the cleaning and maintenance of computer systems facilities and related storage area.

Write technical specifications as required.

Prepare quarterly report on site licenses etc. as needed or required.

Document problems, solutions, programs, and procedures for computer systems.

Respond to and answer questions of students and staff on computer systems, software programs, and peripheral equipment.

Maintain record of inventory movement.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Environmental Conditions:

Office environment, exposure to computer screens.

Some infrequent overnight travel is required.

Physical Conditions:

Remaining in stationary position (sitting or standing) for long periods of time.

Close visual acuity to perform any activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer monitor; extensive reading.

Frequent with communication in person, via telephone and email.
