Minimum Qualifications

American Library Association (ALA Accredited) Masters in Library Science (MLS) or Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS)

Minimum of five years of professional library experience in an academic setting, two at the administrative/supervisory level

Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with library staff and faculty

Proficiency in written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as excellent listening/participatory skills

Demonstrated initiative, teamwork and creative problem-solving skills

Demonstrated ability to undertake concurrent multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and set reasonable goals and time frames for work to be accomplished

Broad understanding of the functions and missions of community college libraries and current trends in academic libraries

Active participation in the library profession with a commitment to continued personal and professional development

The work requires varied physical activities, including repetitive data entry, periods of standing, stooping and stretching to shelve or retrieve books, carrying light boxes, books, and pushing book carts that can weigh up to 50 pounds. The work involves everyday risks or discomforts typically associated with libraries, offices, and class rooms. Some evenings may be required.

Position Description

This position consists of two primary functions: Director of Library Services and Archivist.

 

The Director of Library Services administers all aspects of library services in support of academic

programs, faculty teaching, and student learning.  Provides vision and strategic direction for library

services in alignment with the college mission. Advocates for the library, supervises all library personnel,

oversees the development and management of budget, planning, coordination and supervision

of policies and procedures for the library.

 

The Archivist organizes and directs the operations of the Rockingham County Historical Collections

(RCHC), and the RCC College Archives, both of which are housed in the James Library.

Director of Library Services:

Plans, organizes and directs the operation of library programs and services including policies, budgets, special projects, grants and personnel

Initiates requests for positions; actively participates on committees that recruit, screen, and recommend library personnel; supervises library personnel; completes yearly performance evaluations for all library personnel; schedules library personnel

Selects library materials for purchase including print and electronic formats

Plans and recommends a budget

Creates orders and pays invoices through e-Procurement

Orders library materials from vendors and jobbers

Collects data, prepares and submits annual federal and/or state library reports

Develops, recommends and implements annual library budget; supervises internal allocation of budgeted funds; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with budgetary guidelines

Creates and maintains the library website.

Responsible for the administration and support of the library automated system; acts as liaison and point of contact with the system vendor and the CCLINC library consortium; maintains the integrity of the system

Collaborates with Technology Support Services concerning software and technologies for the library

Plans, recommends, and utilizes software to support library functions

Collects and analyzes library data and produces reports

Manages ongoing assessment activities by identifying outcomes, selecting assessment methods, analyzing assessment results, and describing how the results are used to improve services that support teaching and learning.

Promotes and markets library services to students, faculty, staff, and community users through print, web and social media

Responds to student and faculty concerns and issues

Assists in providing circulation and reference services as needed

Serves on campus committees and participates in professional organizations related to academic libraries and archives

Participates in professional development opportunities and on-campus activities, including graduation

Archivist:

Develops and administers RCHC policies approved by the RCC Foundation

Maintains the RCHC through acquiring, cataloging, processing, organizing, and arranging collections

Develops and submits the RCHC budget for approval by the RCC Foundation and pursues grant opportunities

Provides reference services and access to the collections

Creates displays, finding aids, and instructional materials relating to the collections

Promotes the collection using traditional methods, online methods and social media

Selects and orders books, archival supplies and office supplies for RCHC

Supervises RCHC volunteers and interns

Collects, preserves, organizes and makes available documents and photos important to the history of RCC through creation and maintenance of the RCC College Archives.
