Minimum Qualifications
Required educational background:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in student development or a closely related field
Required kind and number years of work experience:
- Community college experience, particularly in advising, success coaching, orientation, and related student support services
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Excellent customer service, multitasking, organization, prioritizing, Datatel and Microsoft Office Suite experience, ability to follow-up in a timely manner, excellent written and oral communication, ability to work in a fast-paced environment during peak periods, and an understanding of and commitment to the open-door philosophy of the community college.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution. 3 years of experience new student orientation facilitation, program design and evaluation or in an advising or admissions setting.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Position Description

This position directs and leads New Student Orientation and programming that supports the effective onboarding of all new students. Additionally, this role supervises five staff members and collaborates with a team to address barriers to onboarding and success.

Essential Duties
- Ensure that students have a smooth onboarding experience to the college and assist in solving complex admissions or onboarding issues that students experience.
- Identify barriers and opportunities for the college to consider and reexamine how to support students through the onboarding process best.
- Provide leadership and direction for New Student Orientation.
- Coordinate with Navigate Directors and Institutional Research to assess student orientation and onboarding experiences.
- Supervise two Education Navigators, Student Onboarding Coordinator, and Full-Time and Part-Time Student Onboarding and Success Assistants.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to create a coordinated first-year experience that intentionally connects students to needed support and resources a specific times throughout the first year.
- Provide leadership to the NC Reconnect process and re-engagement efforts focusing on students that have stopped out.
- Collaborate with the Division of Student Services to ensure students have access to needed resources, using the New Student Success Questionnaire as a tool to connect students to needed resources. This includes coordinating training efforts, coordinating ongoing alterations to the questionnaire with Navigate and IR, and outreach and response processes.
- Coordinate retention efforts for current students in partnership with the Division of Student Learning and Student Services, Academic Advisors, and other staff and use data to inform outreach and decision-making.
- Collaborate with various offices to coordinate new student programs and welcome experiences during the first week of courses each semester, ensuring a smooth transition for all students.
- Identify and implement opportunities in collaboration with the Dean of Student Onboarding and Success for student leaders to be involved in the onboarding and advising process.
- Partner with the Dean of Student Onboarding and Success to identify training and development opportunities for staff.
- Support process for students experiencing academic challenges through the probation and suspension processes.
- Lead efforts for the Brothers of Excellence program and serve as a point of contact for the NCCCS and the Minority Male Initiative
- Coordinate assessment efforts for the department in partnership with the Dean of Student Onboarding and Success.
- Serve on a leadership team for the department that collaborates in the planning of events, supporting and developing staff, and helping to move our department forward.
