Five (5) years' successful business experience in an ownership or executive management capacity; or relevant consulting capacity.

Master's degree in business administration, entrepreneurship or accounting from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Director of the Small Business Center is directly responsible for planning, coordinating and executing all efforts of the Small Business Center to foster entrepreneurial development in Craven County. These responsibilities require leadership in small business activities; directing and participating in educational programming; staffing, training and supervision of staff and instructors; and collaborating with other college departments, the local chamber of commerce and other relevant institutions to promote entrepreneurship in the community. This position organizes training for prospective entrepreneurs/business owners; provides business counseling services to the county's entrepreneurial community within guidelines established by the NC Small Business Network; and develops and maintains budgets and generates reports.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides business counseling services for prospective and current small business owners in business planning, management, financial analysis and related areas; makes referrals as appropriate to other entities
  • Maintains a dedicated resource information center of development literature, checklists, worksheets and other pertinent information
  • Promotes the services of the SBC within the local community utilizing social media, traditional media and participation in community events
  • Develops, plans, schedules, implements, delivers and evaluates educational programs that meet the needs of the small business community
  • Recruits, interviews and contracts with instructors and/or vendors to provide training
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of instructors through observations and participant surveys
  • Researches and benchmarks the activities of the SBC with the activities of similar centers to improve overall offerings
  • Manages the SBCN CMS client activity tracking system and maintains program records for audit trails, program evaluation and follow-up
  • Develops, monitors and oversees the budget for the SBC program
  • Participates in required certification training activities
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, entrepreneurship or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Five (5) years' successful business experience in an ownership or executive management capacity; or relevant consulting capacity.

Master's degree in business administration, entrepreneurship or accounting from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

  • Principles and practices of administration in community college education
  • Budgeting, financial reporting and recordkeeping principles and practices
  • Client/student counseling principles and practices
  • Project planning techniques
  • Craven County (geographic, economic, workforce, etc.)
  • Public relations and marketing principles and practices
  • Laws affecting small businesses in North Carolina

 
Skills

  • Proficiency in planning, organization, communication, presentation, negotiation, training, supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate; proficiency in technological systems as they apply to instructional, administrative, and workplace needs, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Intermediate computer proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent public speaking skills to deliver effective verbal presentations
  • Budget preparation and management; working within the constraints of budget
  • Complex problem solving skills to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Competency in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, program and department to make improvements or take corrective action
