Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major course work in business management, entrepreneurship, or a related field.
  • Five years of Small Business Administration, Corporate America, industry or entrepreneurship experience. 
  • At least two years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in a business related setting.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business management, entrepreneurship, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of experience in a business consulting, counseling, or coaching role.

Founded in 1958, Alamance Community College is the 14th Largest of North Carolina’s 58 Community Colleges, enrolling approximately 15,000 curriculum and continuing education students. The College is located within the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina in Beautiful Alamance County on the interstate 85/40 corridor between the cities of Greensboro and Durham.
 
ACC is seeking a dynamic, innovative, strategic, energetic and proven visionary leader to serve as its next Director of the ACC Small Business Center.  The successful candidate will be extensively involved in the community, possess excellent leadership skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to think strategically while working independently.  This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Corporate Education and Economic Development.  The successful applicant will oversee the operational budget, submit accurate reports, and assist in other projects and duties as required within the Division of Corporate Education and Economic Development.
The objective of the Alamance Community College Small Business Center (SBC) is to increase the success rate and the number of viable small businesses in Alamance County by providing high quality, readily accessible assistance to prospective and existing small business owners which will lead to job creation and retention. The Small Business Center (SBC) is a community-based provider of education and training, counseling, referral and information.
 
At the core of its vision, the Small Business Center focuses on entrepreneurship, small business and economic development with an emphasis on assisting start-ups, early stage, and businesses seeking assistance to stabilize. Our unique structure allows ease of access and unparalleled knowledge and linkages within Alamance County. We collaborate with State and local entities to help business owners get the most current information needed to start and successfully operate their enterprises.

The Director of the Small Business Center (SBC) is responsible for the total operation of the Small Business Center. Responsibilities include assisting Alamance County citizens to begin new businesses and help existing small businesses thrive; identifying small business needs and then helping meet their needs; coordinating and implementing seminars and continuing education classes; expanding SBC activities; providing one-on-one assistance to small businesses; providing quality counseling; networking with business leaders, volunteers, advisory groups, and local, state, and federal agencies; and aggressively marketing the Small Business Center so the county citizens are aware of it’s services.  This position collaborates with external partners and College Staff to coordinate activities that support and promote entrepreneurship in Alamance County. 

 

Example of Duties

  • Assumes full management responsibility for all SBC services and activities outlined in the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) guidelines including providing one-on-one counseling to new, existing, or potential small business owners, coordinating workshops, selecting print materials and resources of interest to small businesses.
  • Manages the development and implementation of SBC goals, recommendations, objectives, policies and priorities.
  • Manages the implementation of SBC seminars and programs and approves the negotiation of instructional rates.
  • Maintains the secure client management database (Centeric) to ensure counseling records are up to date and training events are set up as required by Small Business Center Network (SBCN) guidelines.
  • Compiles client data, training events and a small business success story annually to be submitted to the NCCCS office as required by SBCN guidelines.
  • Obtains levels of credentialing as required by SBCN with Level I achieved in the first 12 months of employment. 
  • Establishes appropriate service and staffing levels with College policy. 
  • Evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and allocates resources accordingly.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates workloads, projects and programmatic areas of the SBC. 
  • Meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Assesses and monitors workload, administrative support systems and internal reporting relationships.
  • Identifies opportunities for service improvements and implements changes.
  • Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates administrative assistant personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures.
  • Oversees and participates in the development and administration of the SBC budget; approves expenditures and implements budgetary adjustments as necessary.
  • Approves the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Explains and defends SBC policies and activities; negotiates and resolves sensitive issues.
  • Participates in professional group meetings and maintains contact with: Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development Partnerships, NC Department of Commerce, NC Military Business Center, SBC Network, Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC), the local Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) chapter and other in our support groups in our service area
  • Create and implement long-term strategic plans for growth and small business support.
  • Coordinates center activities with other College departments and outside agencies and organizations.
  • Provides support to assigned boards and commissions.
  • Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the Small Business field.
  • Resolves difficult inquiries and complaints.
  • Maintains contact with appropriate economic developers, boards, commissions, and partnerships.
  • Markets services and programs of SBC to individuals, businesses and industries throughout Alamance County.
  • Makes referrals for services outside of the nature and scope of the SBC goals and objectives.
  • Works as an integral member of the Corporate Education and Economic Development team.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
