Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, social work, or related field • Minimum of one year of counseling experience • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as listening and organizational skills • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and tactfully with others

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working with students in higher education • Previous experience working in Student Affairs/Student Services/Support Services • Previous experience with federal funding, financial aid, or federal/state grants

Job Description

The Emergency Assistance Counselor is a full-time, 12-month, grant-funded, non-clinical position located on the LLP Campus in Polkton, NC. Under the direction of the Director of Counseling, the Emergency Assistance Counselor supports college retention efforts by providing academic, personal, and crisis counseling to the student population in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emergency Assistance Counselor collaborates with faculty and staff to identify resources for students and provide quality support services. This position must be available to work day and evening hours as well as occasional weekends.

Job Duties

• Provide academic, personal, and crisis counseling to a diverse community college student population in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Refer students appropriately to internal and external resources. Maintain the confidential nature of such contacts. • Review requests and provide case management for students applying for COVID-19 emergency relief or other emergency financial assistance. • Promote and participate in retention activities and efforts, including but not limited to responding to early alerts. • Connect students to the Student Assistance Program and SPCC Food Pantry. • Maintain knowledge of updates regarding local and state-supported community resources and HEERF funding. • Remain knowledgeable in the SPCC curriculum and continuing education programs, admissions standards, testing standards, financial aid, etc. • Provide student development workshops on mental wellness, COVID-related stressors, and other topics that support student success. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal guidance • Work variable schedule if needed, including evenings and/or weekends. • Participate in SPCC teams as requested. • Perform other duties as assigned.
