Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Possession of or working towards a NCCCS-recognized College and Career Readiness teaching credential (New hires will have up to two years from hire date to complete a teaching credential)
  • Ability to teach English Language learners at different levels of proficiency
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of adults
  • Experience developing lesson plans and integrating technology into the classroom.
  • Excellent advising, follow up, and organizational skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs

Preferred Qualifications

NCCCS-recognized College and Career Readiness teaching credential

  • Experience with adult learning frameworks
  • Minimum of one year teaching adult learners
  • Experience developing ELA/ESOL/citizenship curriculum 
  • Advanced degree (masters level or higher) from a regionally accredited institution
  • TESOL certification a plus

Position Description

The English language Acquisition (ELA) Instructor position is a full-time, 12-month position located at The Carrington Scott Main Campus, Dillingham Center, or community partner site within Alamance County. Classes may include: face to face, hybrid, or online options. Under the direction of the English Language Acquisition Program Coordinator, the ELA Instructor will be responsible for assisting adult learners with acquiring language, academic, digital, and employment skills necessary to achieve proficiency and to transition to adult basic education or high school equivalency classes, workforce development pathways, and/or post-secondary academic and training opportunities.

 

Example of Duties

  • Provide evidence-based educational opportunities for adult learners with diverse educational needs
  • Assist with advising students on next possible steps and connecting to college and community resources when appropriate
  • Teach meaningful, relevant, and aligned content to students who have the goal of speaking, writing, and comprehension of the English language.
  • Develop high-quality lesson plans aligned to the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards, and English Language Proficiency Standards.
  • Contextualize educational opportunities to include employability and soft skills development
  • Develop proficiency in best practices and transitioning elements
  • Manage instruction with computer-based learning platforms
  • Pursue professional development and share expertise and best practices within the college, locally and at the state level, when appropriate
  • Cultivate a positive, collegial, and collaborative learning environment in the classroom
  • Demonstrate a positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions, and managing projects
  • Represent the department and college professionally at community and college events
  • Maintain required documentation and paperwork to adhere to program deadlines
  • Adhere to departmental and institutional policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator or Director of College and Career Readiness
