Minimum Qualifications

Associate Degree from a regionally accredited institution with five years of experience environmental or occupational health and safety or a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution with 3-5 years of experience in environmental, occupational health and safety.

Preferred Qualifications

*  Cross functional understanding of a wide base of subject matter relative to environmental, safety, fire prevention and other life safety items.

*  Completion of OSHA 10 or 30, MESH or other related certification

Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Director of Environmental Health/Safety, the position will assist with the management and coordination of a multi campus environmental, health, safety and fire prevention program and services.  It also requires knowledge of OSHA, EPA, Local, State, and Federal Environmental Health & Safety regulations. 

This position will be responsible to Director and Executive Director level personnel for execution of policies and advice. They may also work with rank and file employees in pursuit of project assignments or objectives. This position requires knowledge and proficiency in utilizing Microsoft office and/or Google Workplace. Position may require training personnel, speaking in public or presenting. 
 

General Function

Reporting to the Executive Director of Environmental Health/Safety, assist with the management and coordination of a multi campus environmental, health, safety and fire prevention program and services.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

1.  Perform programmed and unprogrammed environmental health and life safety inspections at all Central Piedmont campus locations and premises to identify hazards and provide corrective recommendations. Bring non-compliance items up to federal, state or local regulatory requirements. Ensure recognized deficiencies are addressed in a timely manner to mitigate risk, preserve life, property and other tangible assets.

2.  In coordination with Campus Security, Business Continuity and Emergency Management and Enterprise Risk Management, the EHS Professional will plan, conduct and assess a series of programmed on-going fire drill cycles on a regular basis to evaluate evacuation readiness and overall response deployment capabilities in accordance with state and local fire code requirements. Perform job hazard analysis as needed. Solicit additional JHA information from staff when appropriate.

3.  Inspect above ground storage tanks on a monthly basis per the EPA’s Spill prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan. Coordinate corrective measures if needed.

4.  Monitor special waste streams and provide oversight to third party vendors during the removal and disposition of hazardous, universal or biological waste. Maintain Resource Conservation and Recovery Act very small quantity generator status. Provide consultation to various internal departments that generate hazardous material on the latest waste minimization practices, procedures or products.

5.  Develop, evaluate, process and maintain a variety of files related to fire prevention and suppression activities. Ensure college wide recordkeeping practices meet or exceed regulatory requirements relative to life safety standards. In partnership with local fire enforcement officials and Central Piedmont Facilities Management, perform annual regulatory fire prevention inspections and suppression systems tests. Ensure deficiencies identified by local officials are corrected and reviewed prior to follow-up reinspection.

6.  Work with internal partners to maintain the college wide chemical inventory and the corresponding safety data sheets. Act as primary subject matter expert regarding HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) related items or procedures.

7.  Assist the executive director of EHS with the revising and maintenance of safety related guidelines and programs such as indoor air quality, electrical safety, chemical hygiene and hazard communication.

8.  Research emerging health and safety industry trends and regulatory changes to help keep internal guidelines current and representative of ensuing legislation.

9.  Develop and maintain a system of processes that assist with the documentation and quantifying of internal audits and other means of tracking recognized occupational hazards and potential risk exposures.

10.  Build relationships with local and state regulatory officials that fosters a teamwork environment and promotes overall favorable encounter outcomes.
