Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English or related linguistics field from a regionally accredited institution is required; master's degree in TESOL or related preferred
  • First language fluency in English required; Spanish language fluency desired
  • At least 3 years of classroom experience teaching adult learners 
  • Experience developing course content for ESL classes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Experience teaching linguistic competencies
  • Able to relate to and communicate well with individuals from all socio-economic levels and ethnic groups
  • Exceptional organization, time management, and customer service skills 
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure 
  • Dependable, punctual, and possess the ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of teaching English as a second language in an online environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and the internet

Position Description

The ESL Lead Instructor is responsible for developing course content, selecting materials, and teaching English language competencies to second language learners using traditional and online delivery formats. The Lead Instructor is responsible for integrating civics content and cultural experiences into the curricula.

Lenoir Community College is a comprehensive institution which places primary emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction. ESL instructors are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college:

Mastery of Subject Matter   

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of English language instruction for English language learners
  • Interpret, evaluate, and apply the theories of adult education and English language learning 

Teaching Performance   

  • Prepare and present material for program classes according to curriculum guidelines 
  • Design, write, administer, and grade exams, quizzes, and other forms of student evaluation 
  • Motivate students to attend class, as measured by an acceptable rate of attendance and retention  
  • Receive positive and acceptable student feedback in evaluations conducted twice annually 
  • Keep accurate attendance records in two forms, a daily sign-in sheet for participants and a classroom record  
  • Record time in ADVANSYS daily
  • Meet deadlines for required paperwork
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a team with colleagues
  • Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, and team members, and the public
  • Show enthusiasm to teach, understand and apply current best practices in classroom techniques and materials 
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning 
  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs 
  • Employ available instructional technology, i.e. the Internet, telecourse, interactive technology, instructional software, when appropriate
  • Create curriculum for online and face-to-face classes that can be duplicated by others teaching in the program
  • Supervise other ESL instructors

Evaluation of Student Learning   

  • Regularly evaluate student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, performance portfolios, or other types of qualitative or quantitative evaluation 
  • Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives using the English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education  
  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives  
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning  
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines 
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances

  • Some light lifting of materials pertaining to lab projects
