Minimum Qualifications

  • Comfortable asking for contributions of any kind, at a variety of levels
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Business, Finance, Marketing, Human Relations, Communications, or related fields
  • At least 5 years successful experience in securing funding and providing leadership of successful philanthropic or advancement efforts, OR deep knowledge of and connection with our constituent communities evidenced by living and working in our area for at least 5 years and a willingness to participate in fundraising coaching
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in writing or managing grant applications/awards.
  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge CRM system and Blackbaud’s AcademicWorks.
  • Working knowledge of planned giving.

Position Description

Under general supervision, an employee in this position has administrative oversight and responsibility for developing, managing and continuously improving the operations and relationships related to The Vance-Granville Community College Foundation.  Duties related to this position primarily focus on providing leadership and support for The VGCC Foundation Board, overseeing fundraising and development efforts that are aligned with the College’s strategic plan and directing strategic grants application and grants management efforts in the institution. The executive director is the College’s “chief friend-raiser”, providing opportunities for our donors, alumni, partners and community members to engage with the college mission and vision in authentic and meaningful ways. Duties assigned may vary according to the specific needs of the Division and/or allocation of workload. This position reports to the College president and is a member of the president’s executive leadership team.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Encourages and supports a “culture of philanthropy” among The VGCC Foundation members and college employees.
  • Utilizes creative ways to engage donors and their resources with the College. To the College, philanthropy is not just about dollars, it incorporates all sorts of resources, including time, talent, and connections.
  • Oversees The VGCC Foundation’s endowed gifts:
    1. Develops and implements a strategy for the continuous growth of the endowed resources.
    2. Formulates goals and objectives for the sustainability and development of the endowed resources.
    3. Continuously evaluates endowment investments and other assets to ensure fulfillment of donor restrictions and The VGCC Foundation guidelines.
  • Supports and develops the membership of The VGCC Foundation.
  • Leverages support from The VGCC Foundation board members to cultivate benefactors
  • Solicits private monetary contributions through annual fund drives, planned and deferred giving, capital and major gifts campaigns, and special events. All gifts are important.
  • Conducts regular donor engagement activities, including progress updates and information dissemination.
  • Oversees the College scholarship selection process for all scholarships funded through The VGCC Foundation as well as scholarship recognition activities (collaborating with Financial Aid and Student Engagement internal partners).
  • Provides strategic direction for the Grants department as their senior representative on the president’s executive leadership team.
  • Collaborates with the College departments to actively pursue additional resources for the institution.
  • Maintains an updated donor database and other documentation related to gifts to The VGCC Foundation.
  • Reviews and recommends revisions to The VGCC Foundation By-laws, policies, procedures, guidelines and practices.
  • Manages comprehensive records for the foundation including state and federal reporting, audits, standard operating procedures, legal agreements, 501(c)(3) requirements, and investments. Prepares periodic reports on the status of the foundation endowments and donors as requested by College administration.
  • Engages actively in the College’s service area, including participation in civic groups and other community events, promoting the benefits of The VGCC Foundation. Maintains professional working relationships with stakeholders in the local service area governments, communities, and businesses.
  • Provides other support and advisement to College administration as appropriately requested.
