A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Minimum of one year of entry-level experience in construction or building maintenance trades, i.e., Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, HVAC, Carpentry and or Painting, etc. is required. The candidate must be familiar with safe and proper use of hand and power tools. The maintenance assistant must be able to follow instructions and to perform minor tasks independently. The assistant must have a working knowledge of computers and he/she must be able to communicate well with staff, students and the public. A valid North Carolina driver’s license with a good driving record is required.
A National Career Readiness Certificate and bilingual are preferred.
The facilities maintenance assistant performs basic facilities tasks related to the maintenance of buildings, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and heating/air conditioning systems, scheduled and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and other college assets and assists in repairs, replacement, or installation of electrical equipment. Additional duties include being able to install communication network cables and terminations, perform basic carpentry work or assist other technicians in carpentry job assignments. The assistant will also provide assistance in the repair of aerial parking lot pole lights and fixtures and must perform in a safe, reliable and quality manner all duties, skills, and responsibilities related to the trade. The maintenance assistant performs tasks with the guidance of skilled facilities maintenance technicians and under the direction of the facilities maintenance supervisor or facilities and grounds superintendent. Minor tasks may be performed unsupervised.
