Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Facilities Maintenance Specialist is responsible for performing skilled maintenance, repair and construction of the inside, outside and exterior areas around buildings as well as the various systems within the buildings in more than one field including HVAC and plumbing systems. This position specializes in electrical work.

 

  • Determines work to be completed through visual inspection or assignment of work orders
  • Performs scheduled maintenance and minor repairs on plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning and other equipment as needed
  • Installs electrical wiring as needed according to National Electric Code requirements
  • Repairs, replaces, services and installs equipment including light fixtures, florescent tubes, ballasts, lamp connectors, furniture and administrative and instructional equipment
  • Installs cable for computers and telephones
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick-up items from local vendors; delivers supplies as needed
  • Assists in moving furniture and equipment as needed
  • Prepares facilities for classes, meetings and special events as assigned
  • Performs grounds work as needed
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals

Knowledge

  • Strong practical knowledge of various mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC equipment, controls and systems 
  • Machinery, equipment and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of buildings
  • Operational characteristics of building equipment and repair procedures
  • Strong knowledge of preventive maintenance
  • Strong practical knowledge of commercial carpentry and minor construction work used in the repair, maintenance and improvement of buildings 
  • Established maintenance, fire, OSHA, hazardous material and safety regulations and procedures

 
Skills

  • Proficient skill in the repair of a variety of structural and/or mechanical facilities in a variety of trade areas
  • Intermediate computer skills in Word and Excel
  • Intermediate skills in analyzing and interpreting data

Abilities

  • Work independently; remain focused to produce quality work under time constraints
  • Maintain records of work assignments and materials used
  • Troubleshoot building systems and correct system problems
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Perform basic mathematical computations
  • Interpret blueprints, code manuals, state and federal regulations, manufacturers specifications and other verbal or written technical information used in trades related work
  • Use standard powered and non-powered tools
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
