Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

One (1) year experience in grounds work in planting, cultivation and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses.

Two (2) years' experience in maintenance including work in HVAC, plumbing or electrical.

Valid NC Drivers' license.

Valid NC Pesticide Applicators License (or must obtain within one year).

Preferred Qualifications

Four (4) years' maintenance work experience in commercial and office building operations.

Facilities Technician Assistant

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Facilities Technician Assistant is responsible for performing semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction of the inside, outside and exterior areas around buildings as well as serving as an apprentice to the Facilities Technician in the heating and air, water and electrical systems. This position is also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety and appearance of the College's grounds by performing routine work in the planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants, and grass and seasonal activities such as snow/ice removal and leaf raking.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 50% Grounds
  • Assigns and monitors work of the grounds crew
  • Performs grounds upkeep duties as needed, including grass mowing, grading, seeding, fertilizing, cultivating, watering, pruning and trimming utilizing self-propelled and mechanized power equipment and tools
  • Keeps paths, road surfaces, parking lots and grounds clear and safe by removing leaves, dirt, rubbish, snow, ice and other hazards
  • Performs minor repairs on campus power equipment and machinery; reports items in need of repair or replacement

 

  • 50% Maintenance 
  • Determines work to be completed through visual inspection or assignment of work orders
  • Performs scheduled maintenance and semi-skilled repairs on plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning and electrical systems and other equipment as needed
  • Services plumbing fixtures, water heaters, water fountains and eye washes
  • Repairs, replaces, services and installs equipment including light fixtures, florescent tubes, ballasts, lamp connectors, time clocks, furniture and administrative and instructional equipment
  • Assists in the monitoring and adjusting of computer energy management systems as required to maintain comfortable building temperatures
  • Performs minor repairs on campus power equipment and machinery; reports items in need of repair or replacement
  • Installs cable for computers and telephones
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick-up items from local vendors; delivers supplies as needed
  • Assists in moving furniture and equipment as needed
  • Prepares facilities for classes, meetings and special events as assigned
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent.

One (1) year experience in grounds work in planting, cultivation and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses.

Two (2) years' experience in maintenance including work in HVAC, plumbing or electrical.

Valid NC Drivers' license.

Valid NC Pesticide Applicators License (or must obtain within one year).

Preferred:
Four (4) years' maintenance work experience in commercial and office building operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge

  • Grounds keeping and horticultural practices
  • Cultivation pruning, spraying and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC equipment, controls and systems
  • Machinery, equipment and tools necessary for grounds maintenance and maintenance and repair of buildings
  • Operational characteristics of building equipment and repair procedures
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Established maintenance, fire, OSHA, hazardous material and safety regulations and procedures

 
Skills

  • Advanced skills in operating and maintaining grounds maintenance equipment and tools
  • Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Intermediate skill in the repair of a variety of structural and/or mechanical facilities in a variety of trade areas
  • Intermediate computer skills in Word and Excel
  • Intermediate skills in analyzing and interpreting data
