Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Required Education/Training:

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid NC driver’s license with driving record that is within the parameters set by the college.

Minimum Required Experience:

  • Five years of related experience in the fiber optic cable installation field is required.  

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher are preferred.
  • Experience with relevant industry equipment such as, mini excavator, bucket truck, etc.
  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification.

Position Description

DEFINITION:

The primary purpose of this position is to sustain a high-quality teaching performance in the Fiber Optic Network Cable Installer program at the CFCC North Campus. Position will include the development of new curriculum and preparing educational material for courses, provide classroom instruction to students through lecture, demonstration, and laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions and testing. Courses may be taught in-person, hybrid, and/or online classes with day and evening courses.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from the Director of Workforce Readiness Programs
  • Exercises no supervision

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENT:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Assist students in developing the fundamental skills required to serve as an entry-level fiber optic cable installer or technician.
  • Instruct fundamental principles of fiber optic technology, including installation, cable termination, splicing and fusing, and using the testing equipment to troubleshoot transmission issues.
  • Teach fundamental safety protocols and perform hands-on labs working with fiber optic cables and equipment such as a fusion splice.
  • Teach hands-on lands working with industry-recognized equipment such as a mini excavator, bucket truck, etc.
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities
  • Develop and prepare supplement materials to enhance textbook lessons
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade record individual scores
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
  • Maintain and submit all required paperwork in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, also enter grading and attendance information in Web Advisor within deadlines.

  • Maintain a lab area that is safe and clean.
  • Follow all OSHA rules regarding a safe workplace.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines

Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed
  • Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

  • Interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the function to which assigned
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both orally and in writing

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
