Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social work, or related field.  Preferably experience in workforce education.  National Career Readiness Certificate is required.   
 

  • Documented experience working with social service organizations and/or collaborative programming teams.
  • Effective written and oral communications.
  • Ability to problem-solve using creativity and innovation to offer educational and training services.
  • Ability to conduct effective, sensitive dialogue with prospective and current students.

Preferred Qualifications

Information Technology Requirements:  Must be able to operate a computer equipped with such software as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, SPSS, Microsoft Project specialized decision science software, etc.  Able to use Outlook email and conduct research on the Internet. Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as laser and color printer, computer projection device, fax machine, photocopier, telephone, etc.

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves mostly sedentary work, but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time. 

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak to and/or signal to people in order to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

The work performance of supervisory personnel of Pitt Community College is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the advisement process, the Career Services Department, and regulations of the College as they apply to duties of the position. Has considerable knowledge of Colleague/Datatel, general office operations, functions, and procedures. Uses sound judgment and makes educated decisions in routine and occasionally, non-routine situations. Communicates effectively with others, both in person and over the telephone, in a clear and pleasant manner. Has the knowledge and intelligence required to communicate with all levels of staff, faculty, students, and the public in the performance of the job. Is able to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and related information. Is able to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and office operations. Is able to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments in a timely fashion. Has knowledge of how to estimate time, materials, and supplies required to complete various routine activities. Is able to learn and apply new skills needed in order to promote efficient completion of duties. Has good organizational and human relations skills. Is able to deal with emergency situations that may arise. Staffing:  Works with the Personnel Department to select and recommend employment of personnel for the department who are qualified both technically and philosophically to meet the needs of the department and College.  Personally directs the development and training of department personnel in order to ensure that they are properly inducted, oriented and trained.

Leading: Provides a work environment, which encourages clear and open communications. Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how such principles are to be applied.  Provides adequate feed?back to staff so that they know whether their performance levels are satisfactory. Commends and rewards employees for outstanding performance yet does not hesitate to take disciplinary action when necessary. Exercises enthusiasm in influencing and guiding others toward the achievement of College goals and objectives.

Under supervision the position of Education Navigator will work with the College to develop best practices in collaborating with the Department of Social Services in order to strengthen the ability to serve FNS E&T participants, meet with students to guide program selection, create career pathways, and assist students facing challenges along the way. The Education Navigator will serve as a liaison to the College to ensure effective communication in the interest of student progress and engagement, and will have a role in retention initiatives in the division and college-wide level.  Position reports to the Director of Business and Industry. The Education Navigator manages the FNS E&T program activities in collaboration with the HRD Program.  This position will create and implement best practices for working with county Department of Social Services,  developing targeted support and intervention to the Food and Nutrition Services Education & Training (FNS E&T) program including, education case management,  E&T component assessment, funding resources, documentation, monitoring and recording of student progress. This is a time limited grant position.

Document and capture best practices in reinforcing collaboration between Community

College and Department of Social Services as part of SNAP2Skills grant, including models on leveraging resources, understanding partner processes.

Advise eligible students in the development of career pathway plans, academic plans, goal identification, and barrier removal in education and employment.

Coordinate with college departments including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, Adult Basic Education, and Workforce Continuing Education in order to meet student needs and promote student success.

Provide resources, support, and referrals to community organizations to assist in student retention activities.

Coordinate with County DSS office on referral systems and documentation requirements for FNS E&T participants.

Identify, develop, and participate in outreach activities (orientations, job fairs, community events, funding workshops, and individual student appointments).

Create and maintain spreadsheets and documentation to support grant expenses and program offerings, ensuring grant expenditure targets are met. 

Maintain electronic records and paper files.

Complete required reports for DHHS - DSS and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).  

Serve as FNS E&T community college representative at meetings as assigned.

Assist in writing the yearly state plan applications.

Other duties as assigned.
