Position Description

The Full Time Admissions Counselor reports directly to the Assistant Director of Admissions and Recruitment Services.  The Admissions Counselor is responsible for the admissions of students into curriculum degree, diploma and certificate programs at Halifax Community College.  The Admissions Counselor provides admissions counseling and recruiting support to students entering programs as well as applications process management and verification of required documents.  The Admissions Counselor has excellent computer skills, experience working with high school students and adults, experience working in the community settings, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, motivated and self-starting, ability to work independently as well as with a team.  The candidate must have strong communication skills and the ability to work evenings and weekends,  The candidate must have the ability  to work in a fast-paced setting, ability to work in an office setting with frequent interruptions, pay attention to detail, and the ability to follow directions.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Administrative Duties

  1. The Admissions Counselor will review and enter admissions applications into the computer
  2. Make sure students are aware of Residency Determination Process (RDS)
  3. Assign academic advisors for students based on program of study,
  4. Mail/send electronically checklist of items needed to complete entry into curriculum programs,
  5. Coordinate evaluation of College transcript(s) with the registrar.
  6. Inform potential students of enrollment opportunities and the admissions process.
  7. The ability to work afternoons, evening and weekends.
  8. Be able to work with high school students in introducing them to access to higher education.
  9. Assist the Coordinator with enrollment initiatives.
  10. Work in the community settings doing research/outreach.
  11. Have excellent interpersonal, organizational and computer skills
  12. The ability to pay attention to detail.
  13. The ability to be internally motivated and self-starting on specific tasks.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
  15. Regularly review and suggest updates to the admissions information found on the campus website, college catalog, and student handbooks.
  16. Work collaboratively with other student programs staff to ensure that the admissions process is an integrated part of the enrollment and first year experience of new students at the college.
  17. Assist with recruiting events and outreach as needed.  Additional duties shall include other appropriate activities as assigned by the Coordinator of Admissions and Recruitment and Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management.
