Minimum Qualifications

Graduation: High School or Equivalent and Basic Law Enforcement Certification.  

•             Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience in law enforcement, public safety, or related field. Experience in emergency management planning; skilled conflict management and resolution skills; and community policing with knowledge of laws, rules, codes, and currently accepted principles and practices relevant to safety and security operations in higher education.

•             Ensures property is protected against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry.

•             Ability to recognize hazardous situations or suspicious incidents or events and report them to the campus leadership and local police department.

•             Ability to gather and organize information, and achieve logical conclusions in a timely manner.

•             Ability to weigh alternatives and make decisions that reflect the facts of a situation.

•             Ability to perform routine tasks with care and attention ensuring all parts of the tasks are complete.

•             Ensures employees working after normal hours are safe by making periodic checks.

•             Escorting employees to vehicles upon request.

•             Use of a computer system and other electronic or manual devices to secure entrances and exits to buildings at specified times.

•             Assist visitors and citizens with directions, locating State agencies, and perform non-emergency services as directed.

•             Maintain good attendance record, punctuality and abstain from abusing leave.

•             Work effectively with other people to accomplish organizational goals and identify/resolve problems.

•             Must successfully complete drug screening and background check.

•             Must possess a current valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification.



Physical Requirements:  

Although work is primarily administrative, the employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, walking, running, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating

or performing work with associated tools and machines. Must maintain proficiency with a firearm and be able to physically conduct all law enforcement functions, some of which may be arduous, including but not limited to driving a police vehicle and the ability to make arrests. Must be able

to operate in all types of conditions, including rain, snow, sleet, and other natural and man-made hazardous situations. Occasionally requires lifting (10-15 pounds), repetitious finger and wrist movement, and reaching both high and low. Constantly requires speaking clearly, hearing, and seeing.


Generally, this employee must be able to operate office equipment such as personal computer, fax machine, photocopier, etc.

This employee must be able to operate an automobile, as the ability to drive and travel is an expected part of the job.


Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

•             Completion of executive law enforcement leadership training.

•             Eight (8) years of full-time experience in law enforcement, public safety, or related field.

•             Security experience in a campus environment.

Position Description

The position is responsible for leading a team of full-time and part-time law enforcement officers and security personnel in the completion of their duties and ensuring that the Campus community is trained in all aspects of safety and security. The position serves on the Safety and Beautification Committee. The position partners with key campus stakeholders in the completion of their duties.  This is a non-exempt position.


   Identify individual qualified to be Security Officers as allowed by college administration. 

2.            Insure all officers are properly dressed and are performing duties assigned by Chief Security Officer or his supervisor. 

3.            Schedule Officers for work assignments to insure coverage as needed by the campus. 

4.            Insure that time sheets and other pertinent information are received by the Personnel Department in a timely manner. 

5.            Keep a file of all investigations and activities reported to the Security Department. 

6.            Attend and insure proper coverage of events, such as on-campus board meetings, on an as-needed basis. 

7.            Performs or leads team members of the opening of all buildings, including alarms, on weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

8.            Transport daily bank transactions. 

9.            Constant patrol of buildings and parking lots to insure safety of students and campus property. 

10.          Enforce parking regulations and issue warning tickets as needed. 

11.          Investigate and file documentation on all incidents reported on campus. (Notify Weldon Police Department if necessary). 

12.          Enforce implemented campus rules and regulations. 

13.          Respond to all security system alarms. Reset activated alarms and notify any personnel of event status, such as monitoring company. 

14.          Raise and lower flags daily. 

15.          Secure all buildings, including setting alarms, after closing on weekdays. Be sure all buildings are vacant before securing. 

16.          Maintain and secure Security Vehicle (golf cart) and store when not in use. 

17.          Monitor cameras for campus security as needed.

18.          Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises all operational and administrative functions of

the department. 

19.          Develops and conducts training programs for campus community to ensure emergency


20.          Assists with the development of the campus Safety Plan pertaining to campus safety

and security.
