Education Minimum:  Bachelor's degree
           
Education Preferred:  Master's degree in a related field.
 
Experience Minimum:  Five (5) to seven (7) years of nonprofit and/or foundation experience. Proven track record of fundraising capabilities.
 
Experience Preferred:  Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressive experience in foundations in a community college or higher education setting.

Position Description

Summary
The Director of Annual Fund and Advancement Communications is responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive alumni and annual giving plan necessary to build, support, and grow annual support to Johnston Community College and the Johnston Community College Foundation. This position provides direction and oversight to plan, organize, and oversee the alumni and annual giving programs of Johnston Community College Foundation including initiating a comprehensive alumni program, expanding the Annual Fund program with attention on new donor acquisition and increased return on annual appeals. In addition, the Director of Annual Fund and Advancement Communications provides direction, technical and advancement support services for the Johnston Community College Institutional Advancement Division, particularly with regard to annual fund and communications.

 

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
 
Annual Fund:

  • Expansion of the Annual Fund program with attention to new donor acquisition and increase return on annual appeals.
  • Establish performance goals for the Annual Fund, and strategies to achieve those goals.
  • Conduct personal solicitations with annual fund donors and prospects managing an average of 150 relationships per year.
  • Develop, organize and direct annual fund solicitations, including timing and nature of appeals, writing copy, work with College and Institutional Advancement Staff as well as external vendors (as necessary) to manage all aspects of the annual fund process(es).
  • Identify Annual Fund prospects with the intent of new donor acquisition.
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other gift officers to identify ways to improve donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Manage and facilitate the work plans of select committees for the Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Represent the College and Institutional Advancement as needed at civic and community events

 
Alumni Relations:

  • Serve as the official contact for Johnston Community College Alumni.
  • Develop plan of work to implement Alumni Relations program.
  • Work in conjunction with Executive Director of College Foundation as liaison to future Alumni Board.
  • Recruit new members to future Alumni Council and Alumni Association.
  • Conceptualize and oversight of all alumni-focused publications.
  • Write at minimum twice per year alumni-focused contributions for Closer Look newsletter, providing photography support when necessary.
  • Coordinate all Alumni Relations cultivation and fundraising activities
  • Maintain efficient filing system for all Alumni-related communication.
  • Oversee and work with Alumni Council to develop alumni programming to include life-long learning opportunities, seminars, special events, and travel.
  • Work with other divisions within the institutions to secure news releases and other free publicity to promote alumni program.

 
Communications:

  • Manages and oversee a JCC Foundation master communications plan.
  • Develops, implement and manage a Foundation social media strategy.
  • Serves as liaison with any third-party vendor for any Foundation related communications.
  • Writes, maintains and manages content through various communication vehicles (news blasts, website, and other news outlets).
  • Facilitates annual fund solicitation processes working with Advancement staff and external vendors to successfully disseminate both direct and digital campaigns.
  • Serves as content manager for JCC Foundation Website pages.
  • Provides College Communications Staff with pertinent facts, contacts and images for fundraising and special events marketing.
  • Responds to questions through external communications.
  • Serves as a key representative to internal and external constituents.
  • Assists with capturing photography at Foundation events to be used in communications.
  • Adheres to JCC Brand Guidelines and Standards Manual.
  • Work collaboratively with Institutional Advancement team to design pieces related to JCCF special events and communications.
  • Develop and facilitate opportunities to engage current students in a relationship with the JCC Foundation to cultivate a connection that will continue when students graduate and become alumni.
  • Engage with student organizations on campus to further foster that relationship with the JCC Foundation.

 
Resource Development/Stewardship:

  • Maintain frequent communications and contact with annual donors to include annual scholarship contributors.
  • Develop and maintain portfolios of alumni and community individuals as current and/or prospective donors; analyze operations reports respecting donor activity.
  • Work collaboratively with Executive Director and other gift officers to identify ways to improve donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship for donors resulting in increased potential for leadership and major gifts.
  • Manage and facilitate the work plans of select committees for the Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Oversee and direct all stewardship activities for attendees/donors of all College Foundation special events.
  • Represent the College and Institutional Advancement, as needed, at civic and community events and meetings.
  • Directs activities of College Board of Directors as activities relate to the Director of Annual Fund and Advancement Communications.

 

Additional Information:

Language Skills

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills, demonstrated personal solicitation experience
  • Ability to write clear, effective and persuasive communications to include appeal brochures, letters, and newsletter contributions.
  • Ability to comfortably and persuasively meet one-on-one with individuals and corporate representatives
  • Ability to present and speak to groups
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret donor-related analytical reports.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Works, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe, and donor management software (preferably Raiser's Edge).

The noise level in the work environment is typical of a community college foundation setting.
 
Johnston Community College operates on a Monday – Thursday schedule from 7:30 a.m – 5:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. In addition, from mid-May – early August, the College operates on a forty-hour work week from Monday – Thursday with the College closed on Fridays.
 
This position requires evening and weekend work as needed.
