Education Minimum:  Bachelor’s degree or higher in higher education administration/student affairs, sports management, or related field.
 
Experience Minimum:  Three (3) years’ progressive managerial experience with athletics, recreation, and/or student activities and leadership development.

Preferred Qualifications

Education Preferred:  Master’s degree preferred in higher education administration/student affairs, sports management, or related field.

Position Description

Summary 
The Director of Athletics and Student Engagement will provide leadership and coordination for all student-related activities for Johnston Community College (JCC). This includes intercollegiate athletics, intramurals, and recreational programs. Additionally, this position supervises and oversees the Assistant Director of Student Engagement to deliver all student activities including clubs and organizations. The Director will ensure athletic and student life programs are compliant with all applicable JCC, local, state, and national governing regulations and guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides administrative functions of the Athletics Department including internal and external reports, NJCAA requirements, Region X requirements, programs, rosters, hiring and scheduling officials, arranging for facilities, and supporting staff, coaches, and student-athletes.
  • Oversees hiring process of all coaches, student workers, athletic trainer, and related personnel. Maintains the files for coaches and student-athletes and prepares reports for evaluation and planning purposes.
  • Monitors student-athletes academic performance and ensures compliance with NJCAA requirements by ensuring student eligibility reports are submitted in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Administers athletic budgets and works with coaches on managing team budgets to ensure fiscal management.
  • Collaborates with the College Foundation office on fundraising objectives and activities.
  • Serves as college representative to all home athletic contests or arranges coverage for those events.
  • Collaborates with departments across the college to ensure the successful enrollment and retention of new and continuing student-athletes.
  • Coordinates transportation, travel and lodging arrangements as necessary for all away games and tournaments.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of Student Engagement to facilitate student activities, clubs, organizations, recreational programs, and Student Government Association.
  • Develops, with input from student engagement personnel, an annual student activities budget and monitors monthly expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Collaborates with campus stakeholders to develop holistic student engagement and leadership initiatives.
  • Maintains the calendar of events between Athletics and Student Engagement and Communications and Marketing.
  • Assists collaborative efforts with orientations for incoming freshmen, transfer, and other students.
  • Participates in Johnston Community College Committee assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will supervise head coaches, assistant coaches, contracted athletic trainers, student workers, student senators, and student engagement personnel including the Assistant Director of Student Engagement and the Student Outreach and Engagement Specialist.

 Computer Skills                                            
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, be able to maintain athletic website, and other software as deemed necessary.
