Position Description
Summary:
This position is responsible for the overall management of the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center. The director coordinates all activities that take place at the center, including: hunting, educational programs, recreational offerings, special events, and natural resource management. This position serves as the liaison for all instructional programming that takes place at the center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Supervise, schedule, and assign maintenance and repair of cabins and buildings. Plan and supervise facility improvements and additions and, when possible, assist with construction and maintenance of new and existing facilities. Requisition materials and equipment needed for repairs, alterations and maintenance.
- Coordinate all activities at Howell Woods.
- Develop and implement educational and recreational programs and activities.
- Coordinate special events (such as Howell Woodstock).
- Maintain accurate program offerings on websites, social media, and marketing outlets.
- Ensure daily care and feeding of all live educational animals and perform maintenance of their enclosures.
- Maintain current permits for live animal exhibits.
- Collect, receipt, and deposit payments.
- Procure necessary supplies and resources for programs and educational exhibits.
- Manage allocated budget for educational supplies and exhibits.
- Develop and implement the natural resource management plan; and approve and coordinate all requests from local, state or federal agencies or other non- governmental organizations for natural resource management or research activities on the property.
- Coordinate native habitat restoration activities, wildlife food plot planting, and herbicide applications.
- Plan and supervise all hunting related activities that occur on the property.
- Perform all administrative work necessary for operations; including preparing and maintaining the center’s reports, correspondence and files, coordinating the use of volunteers, collaborate with JCC’s Grounds for the sharing of personnel and equipment to maintain the front entrance, trails, road sides and firing range, collaborate with Sand Mining operations, etc.
- Obtain and maintain valid North Carolina Pesticide License.
- Give presentations to civic groups and provide tours and information for guests.
- Serve as the Administrative Support Officer for the Howell Woods Special Advisory Committee.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises employees in the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office

Employee must have thorough knowledge of safety procedures related to high, precarious places; hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens; zoonotic diseases; venomous plants, insects and animals; fumes or airborne particles; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. First Aid, CPR and/or Wildlife First Responder Training is highly recommended.
