Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and experience:
- Three to Five years’ experience with Horticulture and turf grass management.
- Supervisory experience.
- Operation of trucks and extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of power-driven grounds equipment. NC Driver’s license required with satisfactory driving record.
- Heavy equipment operation.
- Basic grounds maintenance methods and terminology of trade.
- Committed to the practice of workplace safety.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of facilities.
Ability to:
- Follow written and oral instructions and procedures from supervisors and administrators.
- Demonstrate a high work ethic with commitment to customer service.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, by using proper English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
Preferred Qualifications
Meet all minimum requirements plus:
Education:
- Associate degree in Horticulture or closely related field.
Experience:
- Five years of experience with Grounds/Turf Management.
- Active pesticide certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
Position Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
Lead in the overall ground’s maintenance of the College campus and satellite locations. Design, develop, and maintain flower beds and gardens and other horticulture projects for all college locations. Directly supervises Grounds Technician I, II and Team Lead positions. Expected to solve most work problems independently and to make recommendations to supervisory personnel regarding those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions, and unusual problems.
Essential Duties
Leadership:
- Maintain an effective work team proud of its contributions to the success of the college. Position the team and individual members for recognition and continued professional development.
- Represent the interests of the team within the context of the college as a whole.
- Supervise departmental team members, providing direction, assistance, accountability, and overall leadership.
- Evaluate direct reports regularly.
- Responsible for enforcing disciplinary action policies and procedures as applicable to the Grounds Team.
- Develop work improvement plans as needed.
- Ensure that records, accountability, and performance adhere to college policies and procedures, NCCCS directives, NC State Administrative Code, and other relevant guidelines.
- Ensure consistent, open communication, professional ethics, planning, budgeting, and evaluation of projects and performance.
- Be a consistent positive figurehead for the team. Supporting and encouraging the direction of campus development.
- Manage the team’s time keeping sheets and completion of monthly reports.
Grounds and Facilities Duties:
- Assist with general leadership in regard to running a productive and efficient grounds crew.
- Lead and direct grounds crew including but not limited to work orders, projects, mowing, landscaping, cleaning gutters, trash removal, snow removal, street and sidewalk cleaning and signage.
- Design flower beds including ordering materials, planting, tilling, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, and removal.
- Maintain the condition of all tools and equipment.
- Order bulbs, seed, and other related grounds materials in accordance with budget and supervisory approval.
- Plant production to include annuals and perennials for special occasions such as graduation ceremonies, etc.
- Mowing and trimming all HCC properties. Assist with replanting of lawns when necessary.
- Proper management of turf grass.
- Removal of grass clippings, sticks and limbs on roads, sidewalks, and lawns, assist with leaf removal.
- Watering; fertilization; weed removal; maintaining shading and covering; insect and disease control on all locations that HCC requires.
- Organization and implementation of care to all HCC garden beds and Arboretum exhibits.
- Maintenance of storm drainage systems.
- Removal of ice and snow during periods of inclement weather.
- During winter months may handle minor facilities maintenance tickets/requests are directed.
- Supervise ground projects; request quotes for landscaping materials and equipment; order supplies; manage inventory; schedule work and assist in budget development.
- Oversee safety talks, training, and auditing of job site safety practices.
- Operation of a variety of college-owned vehicles.
