Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Experience in recruitment and/or success coaching
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, search engines, and web research 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collect/compile pertinent data
  • Ability to work with individuals of all socio-economic, cultural, and diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Experience at a community college either as a student or employee
  • Experience working with diverse and/or underserved populations
  • Experience in college recruiting and/or success coaching, with emphasis on diverse populations
  • Knowledge/experience of student success/retention strategies 
  • Ability to speak and interact with Spanish speaking individuals

Position Description

This grant funded position will work with both new and existing students by conducting recruitment activities and assisting with the development of personal goals by enhancing their ability to successfully navigate through college.  Special emphasis will be placed on minority student populations, with a focus on minatory males.  The position will create and conduct strategies for recruitment and retention.

Through the Minority Male Success Initiative (MMSI), HCC will strive to make its underserved populations a priority through targeted recruitment that reduces access barriers, appreciative advising that helps students choose and enter pathways, and quality success coaching that integrates support services.

This is a grant-funded and time-limited, staff position.

 

Essential Job Duties:

Recruitment

  • Assist the campus recruiter with the development and implementation of recruitment activities
  • Coordinate recruiting meetings and presentations for potential students
  • Attend both on and off-campus recruiting events at the discretion of the director of engagement
  • Work with the College’s career coaches and coordinator of high school programs to reach out to high school populations
  • Learn about and participate in county-wide initiatives geared towards underserved populations and working with diverse groups of people
  • Work with the marketing team to develop materials focused on recruitment of minority student populations
  • Attend community and local high school events focused on diversity and/or minority populations

Retention

  • Assist minority student populations with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in education and career planning
  • Monitor student assessment scores and attendance to track student progress towards positive outcomes
  • Build rapport and trust with students to support goal completion
  • Conduct follow-up with students as needed
  • Support instructors and program efforts to infuse instruction with persistence and success strategies
  • Aid students, success coaches, and instructors towards problem solving issues that arise related to the progress of student academic goals, persistence, and attendance
  • Develop and present lessons, workshops, or courses on career and/or college readiness skills
  • Develop relationships with college and other training providers to stay abreast of community needs and college programs in order to provide students up-to-date and accurate information
  • Establish and maintain effective working partnerships with key stakeholders
  • Participation in professional development opportunities as appropriate for the position to achieve program outcome goals as required
  • Assist with career advising, placement testing, and job placement as needed

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with graduation rehearsal and ceremonies as needed
  • Participate in new student orientation and campus tours as needed to establish rapport with new students 
  • Some evening and weekend events may be required
  • Participate in appropriate professional development workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Be knowledgeable of college policies and procedures regarding admission standards, testing and educational program requirements
  • Encourage and support students’ participation in college activities leading progression and retention
  • Contribute to the attainment of college, division, and department goals
  • May drive college owned vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned
