Education Minimum: A Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience Preferred: Three years of experience as a librarian and/or K-12 media coordinator

Position Description

The Technical Services Librarian assists the Library Director in maintaining the library’s physical and online collections through collection development, specifically the processing and cataloging of materials. The Technical Services Librarian oversees the library’s website, internal software products, technology, and equipment while serving as a liaison to specified academic disciplines.  This position supports patrons’ educational and career goals as well as personal enrichment interests. 

Weekdays and evenings as needed.

 

 Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Manages the library’s physical and on-line collection by cataloging, classifying, and entering new materials into the automated circulation system 
  • Works with NC Community College Systems Office for complex and original cataloging
  • Oversees the library’s use of technology; serves as the point-of-contact for faculty and patron use of library technology and equipment
  • Investigates technologies that will improve services and employs available instructional technology, when appropriate. 
  • Evaluates and recommends the purchase of technology, software, and equipment for the library
  • Partners with the college’s Information Technology department and vendors to procure and install software and hardware 
  • Trains and provides ongoing assistance to library staff, patrons, and faculty/staff in the use of library technology and equipment 
  • Troubleshoots computer and library equipment malfunctions and outages; partners with Information Technology to provide exemplary technological service to patrons
  • Manages the library’s website by performing regular updates to the content and ensuring access to all linked resources and materials 
  • Serves as the primary point-of-contact for Springshare and its varied applications
  • Assists the Library Director with managing the life cycle of electronic resources
  • Promotes and participates in student literacy instruction and faculty training by serving as a liaison to designated programs of study
  • Plans, develops, and teaches library and information literacy instruction both in-person and online for designated programs of study
  • Collaborates with the Library Director and library staff to evaluate and continuously improve library instruction and other programming and services
  • Serves as an embedded librarian as requested by faculty in designated programs of study; develops and/or identifies library resources to be embedded in specific courses
  • Collaborates with the Library Director to select and deselect library resources and materials in assigned academic disciplines and sections of the overall collection
  • Involves faculty in the selection of appropriate materials and resources that lead to students’ course success
  • Provides reference services both in person and online; serves as the primary point of contact to teach patrons how to use the library’s technical equipment.  
  • Coordinates and sets priorities for archival arrangement, description, and processing activities
  • Coordinates digitization projects; works with external and internal partners as necessary toward completion of digitization projects
  • Provides access to archival collections by creating finding aids, collection-level records, and metadata descriptions and maintains a database on collections and storage space allocations. 
  • Assists in programming, promotion, and outreach efforts of the library 
  • Creates student photo IDs and manages technical aspects of ID software in collaboration with IT 
  • Participates in professional development to further knowledge regarding the field of library science 
  • Supports the total mission of the college through the attendance of various college functions and encourages support of the college’s programs, policies, and procedures
  • Serves on college committees as assigned
  • Presents at professional conferences and engages with outside professional organizations
  • Performs other library duties as assigned by the Library Director

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.                         

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.            

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience with library management systems and should be proficient with Microsoft Office products.
