Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma in Dental Assisting from CODA Accredited College
  • Current DANB Certification
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience as a chairside dental assistant
  • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively in educational/training environments
  • Computer literate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience with Eaglesoft Dental Software
  • Experience with Moodle, Colleague, and Self-Service

Position Description

Target Start Date: Fall 2022

Type: Full-time, 9 months, Laboratory/Clinical Faculty for UNC Dental Assisting Cohort

Description:

Provide effective instruction and create an optimum learning environment for all students. Utilize supplemental materials and activities to enhance laboratory instruction.  Evaluate student performance utilizing effective evaluations to assess student performance in the laboratory and clinic.
 
Facilitate a variety of teaching methods for demonstration of chairside and laboratory skills.  
 
Develop, prepare, and teach dental assisting laboratory course. Faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of dental assisting subjects, with possible evening classes. Also, includes UNC and Private practice clinical supervision.
 
Support student learning outside of the classroom by holding regular office hours, facilitating open lab, and providing information about additional resources and responding to emails and phone calls in a timely manner to promote student success. Refer students to campus and community resources to develop strategies for success.
 
Support curriculum development by participating in the evaluation of course content, participating in program advisory committees, attending departmental meetings, and serving as backup for other faculty members.
 
Promote the success of the college by participating in standing committees and following college professional and ethical guidelines.
 
Maintain teaching and work environment by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.
 
Retain professional status by participating in required professional development activities to maintain currency in the field and DANB credentials required by college and program accreditation. 
  
Maintain accurate records such as attendance, grades, information for accreditation, and other important data and submit reports according to college policies.
 
Instruction for UNC Cohort of students, on UNC Adams School of Dentistry campus for laboratory classes and clinicals.    

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Prepare and teach laboratory courses include: learning centered lesson plans, a variety of teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles.
  • Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support material, instructional media and other devices as appropriate
  • Incorporate current technology in laboratory and clinical environments
  • Assess student learning outcomes in laboratory and clinical courses 
  • Assist the department head in maintaining an accurate inventory of program supplies.
  • Promote student success by addressing student concerns in a timely manner and promoting retention by assisting students with learning strategies to promote success
  • Recruitment and advising of students 
  • Maintenance of laboratory and clinical areas; to include upkeep of assigned equipment and ordering supplies.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for all laboratory classes.  
  • Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
  • Assisting in student club activities
  • Assign students to clinical offices and maintain Trajecsys for the UNC cohort. 
  • Oversee ACC cohort students in Spring clinicals at UNC Adams School of Dentistry. 
  • Carry out other duties as assigned

Supervision:
The position reports to the Department Head of Dental Assisting and will work in conjunction with all dental assisting cohorts. 
 
Work Schedule:  
UNC/ACC Dental Assisting satellite program will require day and possible evening hours to meet faculty load minimum and clinical instruction.
