Statement of Primary Purpose

The Gear Up Advisor will serve as a liaison to middle school and high school students in Swain County with the primary purpose of increasing the college going rate of low income students.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Duties of the Gear Up Advisor include:

• Serving as liaison to middle school and high school students in Swain County;

• Providing academic advisement and direct support services to a wide socio economic demographic of middle school and high school age students including low income, first generation and those with a disability;

• Assisting students with identifying career and college goals by providing information about educational options beyond high school including researching institutions, exploring career options, as well as admission and financial aid information;

• Advising students about college entrance exams and test preparation resources and assisting with test registration and fee waiver forms;

• Assisting students with the college admissions and NC Residency Determination System process;

• Guiding students through the financial aid process, including assistance with the FAFSA;

• Promoting scholarship opportunities and encouraging students to research and apply for applicable scholarships and awards;

• Recommending qualified high school seniors for scholarships and collecting required documentation;

• Tracking all services by accurately maintaining demographic and contact information as well as notes from advising sessions;

• Referring students to other resources such as school counselors and staff, college departments, and o other agencies;

• Promoting Gear Up activities through community outreach

Minimum Qualifications

Education           

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)
