The Purpose

The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the campus Grounds/Landscape Department at the Henderson County Campus and maintaining the grounds of the College in order to present a pleasing and welcoming appearance to our students and the community.

What You'll be Doing

  • Assign priority to grounds, motor pool work orders, and process them.
  • Estimate cost of repair on projects including materials, and other related costs.
  • Initiate contract repair when work cannot be performed by personnel under his supervision.
  • Inspect all grounds around the facilities and conduct on-site inspection of repair of projects including contract work.
  • Designing, planning, construction, and maintaining the landscape of the college.
  • Supervises grounds, and personnel, fills out work orders; signs off on time sheets, keeps up with sick vacation time for the grounds department.
  • Primarily responsible for grounds during inclement weather. In charge off all aspects of snow removal for the campus
  • Remain up to date on current practices of local regulations that pertain to grounds.
  • Assist in the minor repair of equipment.
  • Ensure compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures of the College, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies including OSHA compliance.
  • Work with the grounds team on daily projects.
  • Provide training and orientation to all skilled workers in safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Inspect and ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Document and correct unsafe conditions in work areas and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
  • Prepare, implement, and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.
  • Order tools, equipment, and supplies and maintain accurate records.
  • Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Assist in recruiting, screening, selection, training, and evaluation of Grounds employees.
  • Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting(time cards, tardiness, and absenteeism)
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Able to perform performance reviews on team members in grounds dept..

Qualifications

Education

  • High School degree
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Certificate in Turf Management and Landscape Management.

Certificates in: Environmental Health and Safety Management, ISO Awareness, DOT Hazardous Materials, Hazards Materials. Certified US Forestry standards in Chainsaw, OSHA General Industrial Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health, CPR.

If all certifications are not held you must be able to obtain them in the first year of employment.

Experience

Minimum of 3 years of progressive grounds/landscaping management experience

Skills and the Know-How

The ideal person will possess strong personal and professional integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety. Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite or similar products, database systems, College email and website, and other computer applications associated with the position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours as night and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate leadership and supervisory skills with a commitment to customer service, continuous quality improvement and the mission of BRCC.
  • Ability to plan and direct operations in regard to grounds.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations and building codes.
  • Able to prioritize, schedule work tasks, and problem solve
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members and other departments.
  • Maintain the technical competencies necessary to the job function.

Additional Information

Physical Demands

The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines. Must be able to operate in all types of conditions, including rain, snow, sleet and other natural and man-made hazardous situations.
