Position Description
Job Description
The High School Equivalency (HSE) Substitute Instructor is a part-time position located at an off-campus correctional setting in Anson County. Under the direction of the Adult Basic Skills Assistant Director/High School Equivalency Coordinator, the HSE Substitute Instructor will be responsible for providing reading, writing, and math instruction in order to assist adult learners in earning a high school equivalency diploma and preparing for post-secondary training and careers post-release.
In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the College, the HSE Instructor will be responsible for adhering to all correctional rules, regulations, and expectations. Please note, this position requires instructors to work in a substitute capacity, filling in for full-time instructors as necessary. Expected hours range from 6 to 24 hours per month.
Job Duties
• Plan and facilitate lessons for adults who either lack a high school credential, or have tested below a 12th grade level in reading, language arts, or math using the NC Adult Education Content Standards
• Focus on developing students’ critical thinking skills in addition to their reading, writing, math, science, and social studies knowledge
• Support students’ ability to succeed in a high school equivalency exam prep
• Communicate academic material in a positive and appropriate learning environment
• Provide direct instruction, small group and individualized educational activities for students
• Maintain required paperwork for the class including attendance roster, registration forms, and student portfolios
• Establish and maintain professional, cooperative working relationships with correctional center custody and programs staff
• Adhere to correctional center policies and procedures governing the use of facilities and control of inmate movement and activity within the facility
• Strictly follow all correctional center policies and directives relating to entering and leaving the facility, reporting inmate conduct, responding to inmate requests for special favors or treatment, and bringing in or taking out “contraband” materials as defined in correctional center policies
• Communicate with the Adult Basic Skills Assistant Director/High School Equivalency Coordinator
