Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Adult education and three to five years of teaching experience or experience working with adults in an educational environment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including calculator, copier, computer, typewriter, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately twenty pounds.
 
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
 
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor and disseminating information and instructions to staff.
 
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports such as general letters of correspondence, LEIS reports, attendance reports, etc., using proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow and give verbal and written instructions.

The work performance of supervisory personnel of Pitt Community College is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Transitional Studies Department as they pertain to the performance of the Instructional Coordinator of Transitional Studies. Has considerable knowledge of practices, rules, and regulations of the college. Has knowledge of effective practices and procedures for program development that meets the educational and career-development needs of adult students. Is able to use logical thinking and principles of influence systems in supervising personnel as required to implement effective programs. Is able to use abstract thinking in formulating plans, policies, goals, and objectives for the program. Has good knowledge of record keeping practices and procedures of the College. Has knowledge of general office operations, functions and procedures. Is able to use independent judgment in routine and occasional non-routine situations. Is able to communicate effectively with others both in person and over the telephone in a clear manner. Has the knowledge and intelligence required to communicate with all levels of staff, faculty, students; community agency, school system, and public personnel; possesses good listening skills. Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts with all College departments and divisions, co-workers and the general public.

Position Description

Under limited supervision, coordinates, directs, and instructs Adult Basic Skills and is responsible for directing, planning, implementing, conducting, and coordinating instruction in the Transitional Studies Department. Reports to the Chair of Transitional Studies Department.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the department. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

• Supervise, develop, and manage staff for various programs in the basic skills areas of English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and Adult Secondary Education (ASE). At times provide instruction to adult learners in these areas.

 

• Assist teachers in assessing student skill and achievement levels. Manage and administer TABE and CASAS assessments as needed. Provide students with assistance and information relative to High School Equivalency tests and credentials.

 

• Develop, supervise, and manage programs relative to ABE, ESL, and ASE.

 

• Plan, organize, develop, and evaluate adult basic skills lessons, units, resources, materials, and programs to help improve students’ functional and academic competencies. Perform staff monitoring and class visitations regularly.

 

• Work effectively as part of the Transitional Studies team to improve customer satisfaction in a community college practicing continuous quality improvement, responding to inquiries concerning the program under the purview of this position.

 

• Determine community and campus student interest, needs, and goals to facilitate set-up of new classes as needed.

 

• Coordinate and manage courses, program development, transitional and research-based initiatives, and professional development.

 

• Work a flexible schedule, including possible night and weekend classes and/or professional development.

 

• Possess knowledge/experience in the following areas: English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, and High School Equivalency. 

 

• Understand and apply NRS, State, and Local Performance Measures, LEIS, and contextualized instruction to instructional leadership and coordinating, classroom teaching and records management.

 

• Attend professional development as offered locally and by NCCCS. Attend national professional development if available.

 

• Remain abreast of current developments in Adult Education.

 

• Supervise and monitor the development and maintenance of student files for accuracy and to ascertain student progress. Prepare, receive, review, process, file and submit a variety of documents and reports such as course schedules, memos and correspondence, student records, attendance, progress data, quarterly reports, teacher contracts, timesheets, etc. Perform related administrative and recordkeeping duties.

 

• Supervise and monitor accuracy and timeliness of data management, ensuring timely completion and submission of student data, reports, paperwork, etc.

 

• Manage and coordinate adequate inventory of instructional supplies and equipment, supervising the ordering of materials, software, supplies, equipment, and other resources for programs and classes, subject to approval by Transitional Studies Chair.

 

• Plan and implement semester schedules.

 

• Prepare instructor and assistant contracts and time sheets, prepare course schedules and ensure courses are built in Colleague.

 

• Coordinate and oversee activities of teachers and assistants; perform such supervisory duties as instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; and coordinating activities and events.

 

• Proficiently use and incorporate various types of technology, ie computers, calculators, smart boards, etc., for both instruction and record-keeping.

 

• Contribute to the marketing, publicizing, and advertising of Transitional Studies programs, classes, and initiatives. Collaborate with various community officials, civic groups, churches, businesses and industries to develop partnerships to promote transitions, career and college readiness, and academic improvement.

 

• Assist in job placement and career development of students.

 

• Supervise and manage grant programs established for Transitional Studies and apply for grants when opportunities arise.

 

• Coordinate and assist in student orientation, admissions and registration as needed.

 

• Assist instructors in locating and scheduling qualified substitute teachers when needed.

 

• Provide ongoing supervision, professional development, and evaluation of instructors, assistants, substitute teachers, and volunteers to ensure high quality instructional programs.

 

• Collect and maintain appropriate documentation for release of student information and medical information required for off-campus activities and events, and assist in planning field trips and other experience-based activities. 

 

• Disseminate information to staff, instructors, and students as well as campus, community and service agencies that serve the same population.

 

• Address discipline and classroom problems, as appropriate, in conjunction with Pitt Community College Policy.

 

• Serve on various campus, community, regional, and state boards and committees as needed.

 

• Perform other related duties as required/assigned by supervisor 

 

• Possess excellent interpersonal skills including ability to interact positively with public and private organizations and agencies and with individuals with special needs.
