Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in an academic discipline; minimum two years of instructional design or related work experience in higher education; QM certification(s) or comparable certification(s); and online teaching experience in higher education.

Note: Academic Discipline refers to credit and non-credit courses offered by RCC.  This position is expected to support instruction.

  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles, pedagogical strategies, and adult learning theories
  • Knowledge of best practices in universal design for learning, accessibility, user-experience design, information architecture, and graphic design
  • Experience working with subject matter experts
  • Experience developing instructional learning material and providing user support services
  • Ability to work independently or in teams, collaborate with others, lead projects, and provide excellent customer service
  • Experience with synchronous tools such as Collaborate, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with learning management systems, Moodle preferred
  • Excellent time management, project management, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively convey technical information

Position Description

The Instructional Designer (ID) is a member of the Center for Teaching and Learning.  The ID provides faculty with course design support in creating effective and engaging learning environments informed by desired learning outcomes.  The role involves consulting with faculty from diverse disciplines to identify course goals and applicable evidence-based instructional strategies.

As a member of the Center for Teaching and Learning, the ID will provide pedagogical training to faculty through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, etc. regarding topics related to seated and online teaching, the learning management system, course design, and integration of instructional technology.  This includes working directly with faculty on the best practices in the teaching and learning process to include design, development, and management of course; applying adult learning theories, teaching strategies, instructional design models, and integrating educational technologies to improve teaching effectiveness and student success.

This position is expected to provide credit and/or non-credit instruction (minimum 3 contact hours each semester).

Design, develop, and support effective courses

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and CTL Director to design and develop high-quality and innovative courses
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to develop course content
  • Apply and disseminate various pedagogical/andragogical learning theories, instructional design models, and best practices in online and other innovative education modalities
  • Design content and integrate current educational technologies to promote effective teaching strategies and to improve student learning experiences
  • Develop online tutorials, as well as face-to-face training session and workshops for faculty
  • Provides instructional design support to faculty through consultation with individuals and collaborative course design teams
  • Facilitate and coordinate administrative aspects of course development, delivery, and support
  • Assists faculty with conversion of face-to-face courses to hybrid and online formats
  • Coordinate with appropriate CTL staff, stakeholders, and faculty to review new and existing courses and make revisions (e.g., assessments, content, formats)
  • Creating and editing video/audio content
  • Work with TSS to troubleshoot technical issues with instructional technology, such as virtual proctoring service, identity authentication, plagiarism tools, etc.
  • Keep current on best practices and emerging technologies in instructional design

Support teams and programs

  • Serve on internal committees
  • Recommend new technologies to CTL Director
  • Serve as the team’s designated point-person on specific technologies, theories, or other topics by deeply understanding the topic and, where applicable, administering the service
  • Assist with the training and professional development of faculty
  • Provide planning and updates for individual courses within a program to the appropriate leadership
  • Support the development of ancillary materials to enhance the overall quality of programs (such as program-level learning objectives, course requirements, student program orientations course materials, faculty manuals, and faculty workshops)
