Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited institution in Information Technology or related field, or Associates degree in Information Technology/related field plus experience and certifications, that would be equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Must meet minimum SACS criteria and the minimum criteria of other pertinent accrediting, licensing, and credentialing agencies in the area of teaching assignment.
  • Must be Cisco CCNA certified, or obtain this certification within 12 months from hire date.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the ability to work under pressure in emergencies and communicate cyber security and risk-related concepts to colleagues required. 
  • General understanding of industry standards and requirements for information security management, state and federal statutes, and third-party security assessments. 
  • Demonstrated experience in Internet and network security products and platforms, including intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, incident response, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information security alerts, threat trends, and intrusion analysis malware, anomalous behavior, forensic research, and incident response protocols. 
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) certification required.  In addition to the standard background check, this position requires having a clear fingerprint-based criminal records search through the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Physical Requirements

  • Generally, works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended periods. 
  • Some walking, standing, and bending required, and the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds. 
  • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines. 
  • In addition to regular office hours, position requires overtime and/or evening hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic teaching experience required with community college teaching experience preferred.
  • Online teaching experience using Blackboard learning management system preferred.
  • At least one year of work experience in cyber-security or related IT information security position preferred.
  • Security +, CEH or equivalent certification preferred. 
  • Experience with firewalls, ACLs, and endpoint security preferred.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:  Python, C#, PHP, Drupal, SQL, and/or Java preferred.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:  Cloud application platforms, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, IIS preferred.

Institutions receiving this designation have met rigorous requirements established by the NSA and have a commitment to “producing cybersecurity professionals that will reduce vulnerabilities in our national infrastructure,” as per the Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity.

 

The Instructor-Cyber Security/Director-Cyber Security Center is responsible for preparing, delivering, and evaluating cybersecurity academic courses and serving as the Director of the Gaston College Cyber Center to support Gaston College's designation of being a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense.  Reports to the Dean for Career and Technical Education.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Instructor-Cyber Security

  1. Maintain a high-level of commitment to training and advancing excellent cybersecurity professionals with a focus on reducing cyber vulnerabilities and risks locally and nationally. 
  2. Responsible for the preparation, delivery, and evaluation of academic courses including preparing lectures and teaching students in classroom and lab environments, evaluating and grading student tests and assignments, fostering student success and completion, making recommendations for updating course design and/or syllabi as needed, and following established instructional procedures and protocols.
  3. Conduct assigned classes of instruction in the best manner to achieve student learning; present information, ideas, and skills in ways which are appropriate to a variety of learning styles and which show sensitivity to a diverse student population.
  4. Provide students with the approved course syllabus and relate instruction and evaluation to that syllabus.
  5. Treat students with tact and respect, maintain collegial relationships, and work productively as a member of a team.
  6. Evaluate achievement with timely interim and final performance evaluations and assign grades which reflect College policy and the achievement of course objectives as stated in the syllabus.
  7. Maintain a high-degree of flexibility to be accessible and accommodate student needs, which may require meetings outside of scheduled classroom or office time consultations to accommodate student needs.
  8. Maintain instructional quality and effectiveness through constant and timely revisions of programs and course syllabi within the assigned content area.
  9. Maintain class records and submit required reports in a timely manner.
  10. Develop new courses and select and recommend appropriate instructional materials and textbooks.
  11. Stay up-to-date on latest technology and instructional knowledge, skills, and abilities through professional development or coursework.
  12. Attend and otherwise participate in scheduled Department, Division, and College meetings and participate in graduation.
  13. Participate in activities that enhance the College's service to students and to the community.
  14. Maintain a working knowledge and use of technology systems such as Blackboard, AVISO, and accessibility software.

Director-Cyber Security Center

  1. Serve as the Director of the Gaston College (GC) Cyber Center.
  2. Coordinate efforts with the GC Cyber Center Executive Director, including trainings, academic offerings, outreach, community partnerships, etc.
  3. Assist the GC Cyber Center Executive Director in requirements and reporting for the Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) designation.
  4. Participate with the Carolina Cyber Network (CCN).

General

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field or discipline with continued adherence to professional accountability. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships.   2. Serve on various College committees as required.
