Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Registered Nurse currently registered in North Carolina with an unencumbered license
  • Unexpired NCDHSR/NCBON Medication Aide Instructor credential
  • Minimum of two years' experience working as a registered nurse (RN) 
  • Experience supervising Nurse Aides or experience teaching adult learners
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in English

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Experience in Geriatric or Long-Term Care preferred

Position Description

Position Summary

Part-time position teaching Medication Aide - Long Term Care (LTC) to students. Will provide assigned course instruction to students through various teaching methods. Teaching methods to include, but are not limited to lectures, labs, demonstrations, exercises, and handouts. Instructional assignments may include work at the Martin Community College (MCC) Main Campus and/or other MCC locations. Position reports to the Coordinator for Healthcare Programs.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction for Medication Aide - Long Term Care (LTC) to the NC Division of Health Service Regulations (NCDHSR) Nurse Aide 1 students within the structured training guidelines mandated by the Division of Health Services Regulations (DHSR) Medication Aide Registry
  • Provide Medication Aide - LTC students with instruction, guidance, and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the medication cart. Allow students to practice medication passing and documentation of medications administered 
  • Provide students a final written and skills exam at the completion of required instruction
  • Supervise students in the lab setting to ensure safe, correct, and competent demonstration of medication administration and documentation
  • Enforce the DHSR mandated attendance rules regarding no allowable absences during the 24-hour course
  • Administer only the written classroom Medication Aide Exam provided by NCDHSR/North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON)
  • Maintain test security at all times for all unit test and exam packets and answer sheets
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information according to FERPA regulations and MCC policies and procedures
  • Upon course completion, instruct students on how to create their online Credentia accounts to register for the NC Medication Aide (NCMA) Exam
  • Upon email notification by Credentia, verify each student’s eligibility to test for the Medication Aide (NCMA) Exam within 7 days after Credentia email notification
  • Assist the Program Coordinator with gathering, maintaining, and updating student record information for Medication Aide - LTC students as required by NCDHSR regulations
  • Notify the Program Coordinator of damaged or broken instructional/lab equipment and/or low supply inventories
  • Leave classrooms, labs, and equipment, clean, organized, and safe after every class
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Correspond with students and supervisors through e-mail in a timely manner. Be accessible to supervisors by phone and email
  • Adhere to all NCDHSR, NCBON, departmental, divisional, and MCC policies and procedures
  • Respond appropriately to requests and inquiries from students and the general public
  • Respond to student issues professionally and report unresolved issues or classroom incidents to the Healthcare Programs Coordinator
  • Maintain physical condition necessary for walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time
  • Maintain physical condition necessary for lifting and carrying light materials and equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
