Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Two calendar years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.
  • Commitment to obtain certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator within 2 years of hire date.
  • 1 year experience in operation of simulation equipment including; simulators, standard audio-visual equipment: projectors, microphones, portable screens, media players, etc.
  • One year teaching experience at the Community College level in a nursing program.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution with specialization in Nurse Education.
  • One-year previous teaching and clinical experience in critical care and/or medical surgical nursing. 
  • One year of experience in healthcare simulation as an educator or simulation technician. 
  • Certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator.

Position Description

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Instructor for Simulation, Nursing facilitates the operation of nursing simulation lab, overseas the preparation, maintenance, inventory and operation of nursing simulation equipment/supplies and collaborates with faculty including course development, outcomes including; design, plan, implement and schedule simulation activities. The Instructor for Simulation, Nursing ensures adherence to program policies, course objectives, program outcomes and current simulation best practice and safety measures. This position is a 12 month, full-time placement. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.  This position will report to the Department Head, Nursing.

 

DUTIES:

 

Simulation Lab

  • Develop simulation curricula to support program and course outcomes.
  • Conduct debriefing within scope of knowledge or assist content expert with debriefing.
  • Incorporate best practice and evidenced-based research in program development with a focus on standardization and efficiencies across the healthcare continuum.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of curricula for Nursing and allied health programs.

Coordinate the set up and maintenance of computer-based training programs for simulation.

  • Coordinate and supervise the general operation of the simulation laboratory to provide a wide variety of patient simulation experiences.
  • Act as the primary contact for scheduling the simulation.
  • Oversee the regular maintenance and repair all simulation equipment, including:
    • Human patient simulators (HPS), computers, monitors and a variety of clinical medical equipment.
    • Audiovisual and debriefing systems.
  • Communicate effectively with manufacturers regarding warranty, maintenance, repair, update and technology changes.
    • Coordinate upgrades to software and equipment as needed.
  • Provide technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including, but not limited to:
    • Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, and other health care equipment
    • Medication dispensing systems
    • Vital sign monitors
  • Organize and restock simulation laboratory supplies.
  • Oversee the set up and take down of simulation laboratory equipment – allowing for turnover of the simulation lab set up as necessary to accommodate multiple groups.
  • Provide recommendations for equipment and supply purchase anticipating future changes in technology.
  • Ensures safety for all users.
  • Maintain laboratory to meet regulation and accreditation standards.
  • Fill-in for instructor (lecture and/or lab) when necessary
  • Develop simulation protocols for each course
  • Coordinate training for all users of the simulation laboratory including faculty.
  • Provide orientation to new simulation lab staff and oversee their training.
  • Coordinate simulation lab schedule in compliance with simulation policies working to prevent scheduling conflicts.
  • Schedule simulation laboratory staff to support learning activities.
  • Maintain learner confidentiality.
  • Troubleshoot and revise problematic nursing simulation lab assignments as requested by instructors
  • Coordinate with instructors what simulation is needed for weekly instruction

Classroom Instruction

  • Teach min 10-13 contact hours per semester. Teaching range may vary to meet required simulation needs each semester.
  • Provide and/or facilitate quality experiences in simulation lab to meet program needs

 

Divisional Administrative Expectations

  • Collaborate effectively with faculty. 
  • Communicate effectively with all educators, administrative staff and technical support staff.
  • Network with other lab/simulation coordinators or educators at local/state/national level to develop and utilize best practices.
  • Coordinate tours of simulation lab.
  • Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data
  • Exert an effort to remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities including attendance at off-campus activities, webinars, etc., as feasible
  • Must maintain current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina
  • Participate in program and curriculum review; offering suggestions concerning the improvement of curriculum in keeping with the mission and vision of the College
  • Serve on the Nursing Advisory Committee
  • Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other announced co-curricular activities of the College
  • Maintain proper communication and supportive relationships at all times with all other units and branches of the college
  • Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the discipline, department, division, and College
  • Participate in strategic planning and good to great reports

 

Other Services to Students

  • Assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of the College
  • Advocate and provide motivation for students
  • Communicate student needs to Department Head
