MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master’s degree from a nationally accredited institution required.

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • At least two (2) years’ coaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop competitive athletes
  • Demonstrated academic success of previously coached student-athletes
  • Demonstrated sport leadership 
  • Exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to athletic governance rules and regulations
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Generally, works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment. 
  • Some walking, standing, and bending required, with the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Athletic events may involve hot and cold temperature conditions.   
  • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines. 
  • Travel for recruitment, games, practices, and various events, including evening and weekend work hours.

Position Overview

This is a full-time position that requires a master’s degree and is comprised of a full-time and part-time role. The full-time or core role supports the overall mission of the College with preference given to someone with the requisite knowledge, skills, credentials, and/or abilities to provide instruction. Other core roles may include duties and responsibilities related to academic success, student and community outreach, health and fitness, or any combination. In addition to the full-time, core role, this position includes a part-time role as an Assistant Coach - Men’s Basketball, which also supports the overall mission of the College, but specifically supports the mission of the College’s athletics program.

 

Full-Time (Core Roles) Brief Descriptions

 

 

Instructor (Preferred) - Responsible for the preparation, delivery, and evaluation of academic courses including preparing lectures and teaching students in classroom and lab environments, evaluating and grading student tests and assignments, fostering student success and completion, making recommendations for updating course design and/or syllabi as needed, and following established instructional procedures and protocols. 

 

Other Potential Roles

 

Academic Success - Maintain direct contact with students and focus on holistic support, behavior interventions, early-alert follow-up, and general assistance to ensure academic success. Identify issues that may be impeding academic success and make referrals when appropriate. May teach study skills, oversee study activities, and participate in academic outreach programming. Provide information to prospective students as applicable and serve as liaison between students, faculty, and student services.

 

Student and Community Outreach - Plan, schedule, and conduct in-person and virtual information sessions and campus tours for groups and individual prospective student visitors. Assist with planning and facilitating recruiting activities for the College to include, but not limited to, information sessions, campus tours, and off-site recruiting booths/presentations. Engage prospective students via in-person and virtual meetings, telephone, and e-mail communication to encourage campus visits as well as completion of the admissions and enrollment processes. Actively participate in special promotional recruiting activities. Prepare and distribute packets of information to service areas, businesses, industries, and civic organizations as needed.

 

Health & Fitness - In collaboration with Health and Human Services Division, coordinate aspects of the Fitness Center which may include scheduling, equipment and facility maintenance, orientation, personal training, administrative paperwork, and recordkeeping.   Actively participate in community outreach activities and health and wellness initiatives. Coordinate the proper use and maintenance of equipment including machine orientation, audits for functionality/safety, and keeping the facility and equipment neat and clean. Help attendees with developing short- and long-term goals and establishing personal fitness/training routines and plans. May lead individual and group fitness classes and create workouts that are safe, including recording/creating manual and digital reports. 

 

 

Assistant Coach - Men’s Basketball

 

Summary

Assist the Head Coach – Men's Basketball with various activities associated with the operations of the basketball program including practice planning, game preparation, game execution, coaching and teaching the knowledge, skills, techniques, and strategies to optimize player abilities and development and team competitiveness, recruitment, conditioning programs, monitoring academic performance and student life and development, and fundraising activities. Assist in coordinating summer and other camps and clinics. Ensure compliance with institutional, regional, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules and regulations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Assist in the implementation of the basketball training and instructional program under the direction of the head coach by providing skill instruction, assisting in the conduct of practice sessions, performing game-related duties, and motivating players to give their best efforts in the development of team competitiveness.
  2. Responsible for practice and game-related logistics including, but not limited to, court preparation, equipment maintenance, and other tasks to facilitate smooth practices, travels, and games.
  3. Recruit prospective student-athletes effectively as assigned by and under the direction of the head coach.
  4. Monitor academic progress of player’s and serve as a liaison with academic support personnel in support of players’ academic efforts.
  5. Serve as a liaison with athletic training and strength and conditioning staff in support of conditioning and rehabilitation of players.
  6. Demonstrate a sincere interest in the personal and academic development, as well as athletic progress, of student-athletes.
  7. Exhibit supportive and cooperative behavior in pursuit of sport program goals set by the head coach. 
  8. Assist with the execution of basketball clinics and camps.
  9. Assist with fundraising. 
  10. Efficiently and effectively complete all assignments provided by the head coach.
  11. Accept constructive criticism and demonstrate professional growth under the supervision of the head coach.
  12. Exhibit good judgment and professional behavior in advising and coaching students.
  13. Conform to the highest standards of professional conduct regarding compliance with department and institutional policies and procedures and adherence to the rules and regulations of athletic governance organizations of which the institution is a member.
  14. Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all staff, student-athletes, and external constituents through a positive and constructive approach to all tasks, respect for the competencies of others, and appropriate conflict resolution behavior.
  15. Serve on College committees and attend staff meetings, clinics, and other activities as required or assigned.  
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
