- Bachelor's Degree required in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or other related fields.
- Two years' experience delivering coaching and/or counseling services to individuals in the community or within the institution of higher education.
- Equivalent combination of education, experience, and skills will be considered.

Job Corps Scholars (JCS) is a government-funded, no cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps socioeconomically disadvantaged youth between the ages of 16-24 improve the quality of their lives through academic and career technical training. The program provides intensive counseling services to support and facilitate each student's employment and career success. Job Corps' mission is to attract eligible young people, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education.
The North Carolina Community College Male Minority Success Initiative was developed to increase graduation and retention rates among minority males and help better prepare them for life at an institution of higher learning.
The JCS/MMSI Counselor will primarily engage with a caseload of students using an intrusive advising model guided by an appreciative advising approach and facilitated by the College's online early-alert/academic planning system. This caseload will be made up of at least 50% of students who identify as men of color.
This is a grant-funded position with an anticipated grant end date of June 30, 2023 with the possibility of the grant being renewed by the U.S. Department of Labor. Continuation of position is contingent upon grant funds.
- Provide individual counseling to a caseload of approximately 40 students, including at least 20 students who identify as men of color, using an intrusive advising model guided by an appreciative advising approach.
- Initiate and maintain individual folders on each assigned student; maintain electronic student file updates, case notes and Individualized Service Strategy Plan (ISSP). Collaborate with an Employment Counselor on implementation of strategies outlined in the ISSP for successful participant employment.
- Conduct in-depth interviews and evaluation to identify education/employment barriers and appropriate JCS services and refer to college/community resources.
- Provide assessments for academic skill levels and design individualized intervention strategies based on student needs.
- Conduct assessment for supportive services needs, distribute supportive services, and make referrals to community agencies for further supportive services.
- Assist students in communicating effectively with faculty, encouraging them to self-advocate and contacting faculty directly as needed.
- Assist participants with course selection and registration prior to the beginning of each semester.
- Facilitate workshops for students focused on personal and academic skill-building.
- Recommend medical or psychiatric evaluation for emotional or psychological problems; conduct referrals to Student Assistance Program, and document student use of program.
- Utilize new concepts and approaches; recommend and conduct training sessions and conferences to develop greater proficiency among staff in areas of guidance and social adjustment.
- Meet weekly with other JCS staff to discuss achievements and concerns of the program and individual students, and implement program modifications for improvement, if necessary.
- Maintain contact with students' families, as appropriate.
- Maintain files; enter case notes and other progress notes.
- Plan and participate in student employability programs and cohort building activities.
- Promote the development of career success standards by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students when necessary and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions.
- Collaborate with campus colleagues to coordinate training efforts in areas such as AVISO, Intrusive Advising, Appreciative Advising, and other student success related topics.
- Research best practices and make recommendations for improvements and changes to programs to enhance student retention.
- Assist/participate in "extended orientation" activities such as New Student Orientations and success workshops as assigned.
- Serve on College committees as assigned.
- Complete the annual five-hour staff development.
- Encourage and support College activities, policies, procedures, and philosophies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
